Mitosis

Cell Division: Mitosis Dividing cells Mitosis and the cell cycle 4 main stages of mitosis A. Prophase B. Metaphase C. Anaphase D. Telophase

Chromosomes must be replicated before cell division. Chromosome structure Chromosomes must be replicated before cell division. Sister chromatids:  two identical copies (chromatids) formed by the replication of a single chromosome

The replicated chromosomes stay together and are called sister chromatids Sister chromatids are attached at the centromere.

The Cell Cycle: (1) Interphase When a cell has not yet divided but is getting ready to- Interphase

(2) Prophase Chromosomes continue to condense Spindle fibers are made Nuclear envelope dissolves

(3) Metaphase Chromosomes are placed at the center of the cell

(4) Anaphase The centromeres separate Spindle fibers pull sister chromatids apart toward the poles

(5) Telophase Spindle fibers break down Chromosomes begin to uncoil

(6) Cytokinesis Usually occurs between late anaphase and end of telophase Two ways…. Cell plate formation (plants) Cleavage (animals)

Cytokinesis: Animal Cell 13

Cytokinesis: Plant Cells 14
