Introduction to Culture World Cultural Geography

What is it? Culture Is the total of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors shared by and passed on by the members of a specific group. Factors of culture include: Food and shelter, religion, relationships to family and others, language, education, security/protection, political and social organization, creative expression.

Culture Cultural hearth Acculturation Assimilation This is a site of innovation from which basic ideas, materials, and technology diffuse to many cultures. Acculturation This occurs when a society changes because it accepts or adopts an innovation. Assimilation This is when people who enter a new culture shed their previous beliefs and take on the beliefs of the new culture

What is it? Society Ethnic group group that shares a geographic region, a sense of identity, and a culture Ethnic group refers to a specific group that shares language, customs, and a common heritage.

Language Language is extremely important in culture as it allows for communication. Its estimated that between 3,000 and 6,500 languages are spoken across the world. Dialect This is an example of changes in speech patterns related to class, region, or other cultural changes.

Language Language Diffusion- This is the spread of language. This can happen as people interact with each other. Trade Routes, Business Partners, Creation of New Language, Migration
