North Ridge High School E-safety curriculum

Curriculum Overview The curriculum is based upon Childnet ‘s Be S.M.A.R.T. online safety initiative.

KS3 - The Digital Curriculum Curriculum Overview The curriculum will be delivered via: KS3 - The Digital Curriculum KS4/5 - ICT lessons For students working at levels below Level 1 (and if inappropriate to use differentiated online safety topics below Level 1), teachers need to differentiate via PSHE online safety curriculum and via the Digital Literacy strands of the Computing curriculum.

Curriculum Overview - Level 1 The curriculum is also mapped to the e-safety progress indicators in B-Squared.

Effectiveness & Evaluation Level 1 Rubric Safety Students understand the basic H&S aspects of using computers. Students understand the positive benefits of using the internet but are also aware that there are negative aspects to using the internet just like there is to most things (food, watching TV etc). Students can list positive and negative aspects of using the internet and can also start to state the consequences of each. Students are aware of children’s search engines. Understand safe procedure for using the internet. Students understand the relevant parts of the S.M.A.R.T. pmnemonic. Collaborating Students understand the meaning of personal information and stranger. Students understand safe practice concerning these and they are able to demonstrate such within simple drama, text and verbal based scenarios. Students begin to develop an understanding the consequence of not adhering to safe practice. Effectiveness & Evaluation Students are able to state different sources of information (access information via PC’s, laptops, mobile phones, iPads, smart TV’s, information stations, barcodes etc). Students are able to identify where and when they would use specific items to source information (i.e. barcode in a supermarket). Copyright Students understand that when they create something (written work, art, photograph etc) they own that work and have a say in how it is shared. Students are able to apply this understanding when answering simple scenario based questions, i.e. can I take your drawing and sell it without your permission?

Effectiveness & Evaluation Level 2 Rubric Safety Students understand what to do if they feel uncomfortable when using the internet. Students also respect their own and other people’s personal information online. Students begin to develop an understanding of appropriate and inappropriate websites and the consequence of having / not having this understanding. Students begin to develop a sense of personal management and responsibility when using the internet (i.e. how much time to spend on it and when to say no inappropriate behaviour). Students are aware of children’s search engines. Students understand that not everything they see or read on the internet is true / real. Students can apply this understanding to enhanced images, avatars, fantasy gaming and lies on a website etc. Students understand the relevant parts of the S.M.A.R.T. pmnemonic. Collaborating Students are able to devise golden rules for when communicating online with people they know. Students understand what a shared area is, what are the positive and negatives of a shared area and how they should behave within one (i.e. not editing other people’s work, not moving files out of the shared area). They understand how and why we use shared areas in school. Effectiveness & Evaluation Students begin to develop an understanding of different types of websites (i.e. sales, social, news etc). Students also begin to develop an understanding of advert links and how they will entice you to click onto other websites. They are able to state positive and negative aspects of this. Copyright Students have an understanding that if they wish to use other people’s work (i.e.music and images) then they will need to be aware of copyright. They understand how this applies to their work within school and outside of school. Students are also aware that some people have given up the copyright to their work and students are aware of how to access this work (i.e. copyright free searches via the search settings on google)

Effectiveness & Evaluation Level 3 Rubric Safety Students understand what cyberbullying is and how they should deal with it. Students have an understanding of the severe consequences of cyberbullying via real life stories from the media. Students have an understanding about password safety, why do we use them, what is a strong password / weak one. Students are aware of various ways to store them in order to remember passwords. Students are aware of online forms and how best to approach them. Students have an understanding of when they may need to fill an online form in (i.e. college application, bus pass etc). Students understand the relevant parts of the S.M.A.R.T. pmnemonic. Collaborating Student develop an understanding of what a “digital footprint” is and how this can be a positive and negative thing. Students must be ensure they have a positive footprint. Students can list different types of people who may be able to view their digital footprint (teachers, employers, partners etc). Effectiveness & Evaluation Students can evaluate a website to see if it is fit for purpose: Search for reviews on a website in particular selling websites. Evaluate the content and presentation of a website. Able to state if images and content appear genuine or not. Students are aware of how to source good websites, i,e use forums reviews searches accreditation on a website. Copyright Students are able to comply with copyright rules when making use of other people's work. Students are aware of how to request copyright permission as well as how to credit other people in their work. Students understand the law concerning music and video downloading and streaming.

Effectiveness & Evaluation Level 4 Rubric Safety Students can devise their own “best practice” set of guidelines that apply to their own use of the internet. Students can identify positive consequences of sticking to them as well as negative ones for not sticking to them. Using these guidelines students can identify areas that they need to improve on. As above but in relation to cyber -bullying. Students understand the relevant parts of the S.M.A.R.T. pmnemonic. Collaborating Students are able to identify different types of social networking sites (inc forums and chat rooms) and understand how to make themselves aware of the rules and privacy settings of each site. Students develop an understanding of the importance of safe practice on these types of sites. Effectiveness & Evaluation Students are able to make effective use of search engines when looking for information. Students also develop an understanding of how to cross check their information by using other websites, reviews and forums to compare information. Copyright Students develop a more in depth knowledge of copyright laws and exemptions. Students are able to apply this understanding to their own various work practices.

Effectiveness & Evaluation Level 5 Rubric Safety Students develop a greater understanding of how to source and use apps, software programs and hardware tools to ensure their safety online (i.e. Ad blocker, call blocker etc). Students understand he S.M.A.R.T. pmnemonic. Collaborating Students understand the amazing benefits of online collaboration whilst at the same time understand how to take precautions to stay safe when collaborating. Students have an understanding of various means to collaborate online (forums, video, google docs, group messaging etc). Effectiveness & Evaluation Students can complete a given task which involves having to find the truth to a given question, students encounter false information throughout their search and have to cross reference in order to establish the truth. This may involve establishing the identity of somebody on an online dating site. Copyright Students develop a more in depth knowledge of copyright laws and exemptions. Students are able to apply this understanding to their own various work practices.

Safety & Collaborating Effectiveness & Evaluation Level 5+ Rubric Safety & Collaborating Students are able to decode and set the complex privacy settings on social media websites in order to remain safe online. Students are able to analyse various different profiles on social networking sites and state the positive and negative aspects of each. Students understand the S.M.A.R.T. pmnemonic. Effectiveness & Evaluation Students are aware of how online gaming, app gaming and online dating can incur costs. Students develop a strategy for dealing with this and develop a habit of always researching the apps thoroughly. Students are able to distinguish between fact and reality when dealing with the games. Copyright Students are aware of all the legal means of accessing and using other people’s work (netflix, spotify etc). Students understand the costs involved and also the benefits to themselves and the industries involved.
