Flowers for Algernon Week 5 Bell WOrk

Tuesday, September 19th Answer the following question in complete sentences. (3-5) Be sure to restate the question in your answer. The climax of the story is when Charlie sees the young man working in the restaurant; explain WHY this is such an important moment for Charlie. Situational Irony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqg6RO8c_W0

Wednesday, September 20th Answer the following question in complete sentences. (3-5) Be sure to restate the question in your answer. One of the most disturbing aspects of the story is the way Charlie is treated by people he considers his “friends”; specifically his co-workers and boss at the plastic factory. Explain how Daniel Keyes uses their actions toward Charlie to develop a message (theme) for the reader. As you answer, remain aware that their treatment of Charlie changes throughout the story. Verbal Irony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiR-bnCHIYo

Thursday, September 21st Answer the following question in complete sentences. (3-5) Be sure to restate the question in your answer. One of the thought-provoking debates over this story is: Is Charlie is better off after the operation being given the opportunity to learn if only for a short time, OR is it more painful that he had the abilities for only a brief time? With which statement do you agree? You must base your answer on specific examples from the story. Dramatic Irony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZFYuX84n1U

Friday, September 22nd Answer the following question in complete sentences. (3-5) Be sure to restate the question in your answer. Charlie’s story represents one of the great debates in modern medicine: should doctors try to change the natural abilities of humans (should doctors try and “fix” the imperfections that people are born with)? In a paragraph, explain your views on this question using at least three examples from the story to defend your point of view.
