NEW Methods of Teaching Luton VTS 2015 Dr R Khanchandani Dr A Sulakshana

Structure Autumn, Winter, Spring Term ST3s will have topic led CSA teaching in HDR and Block from Sept 2015 till April 2016 ST1 and ST2s will be taught separately in HDR and Blocks until April term Summer Term all GPSTs will be taught together until the following September

WHY? Trainee feedback in GMC survey CSA results have been good despite old model Development in local expertise allowing for more Trainers to teach at VTS which will also help CSA Training at practices locally Increasing number of Trainees causing large teaching groups with different training needs

How? Break ST3 into small groups of 3-4 Trainees (4 groups in total) Name the Groups Topics from curriculum to be distributed amongst groups for case writing for the term Use the handout to start writing cases on topics In each HDR or block session 1 group will be the patient group. This group will lead the session. They will provide a mini presentation of guidelines on the topic. They will then break up and act as the patient for remaining groups. Feedback will be provided by members from the active group (doctor groups) Each feedback must contain at least 2 action points for the role player to consider at their next consultation in one of the three areas (data gathering, clinical management, interpersonal skills)

Session Design 9:30 am: Presentation 9:45 am: Role play 1 10:30 am: Coffee 11:00 am: Presentation 11:15: Role play 2 12:00: Plenary/ Setting tasks for next HDR 12:30: Close

Rules…. Start at 9:30 (not 10 or 9:45…) Each Group must prepare for each session or the session is wasted for other Trainees Feedback must be specific and constructive but honest to enhance learning Trainees not attending any session will need to inform their group and handover ensure the work is equally distributed amongst the group They must also do the same for colleagues when they are off Absence for leave must be communicated to Lesley by e-mail (If no apologies are sent the Trainer will be contacted for that Trainee)

Any Question???

What everyone should collect today…. Topic list to be covered in Block/HDR and Training Practices Nub of the consultation sheet Sample copy of a CSA case write up for reference
