LOW ENERGY HOUSING "Underhill", near Holmfirth, Yorkshire The first “modern” earth-sheltered house in Britain and the home of its architect Arthur Quarmby, a pioneer of earth-sheltered buildings - the snuggest form of energy conservation. The house features earth embankments, turf roof, lots of insulation and a visual impact that not even the nimbiest of neighbours could fault.

Low Energy House - Zero Carbon House - Eco Friendly Building The Kingspan Lighthouse is an experimental zero carbon house project at the BRE in Watford. It is a three storey timber frame dwelling that has been constructed to meet Level 6; the highest level of the Code for Sustainable Homes Zero Carbon House Concept The zero carbon house seeks to address the challenges of future climate change and summer overheating. It sets out to create a home with attractive, flexible, internal spaces which are designed for modern living but where advanced construction methods do not compromise the occupants’ enjoyment of the dwelling.

Eco Homes and Carbon Neutral Design The Sigma home is designed to be carbon neutral in terms of space heating , hot water , lighting and ventilation fans. High performance insulation and triple glazed windows make it a highly efficient design. The home also includes other carbon reducing measures such as low energy appliances, high efficiency condensing gas boiler, a home office and cycle storage. Eco Homes - Passive Ventilation A solar stack and ‘whole house’ mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system controls temperature in a passive system. The stack sits centrally above the stairwell and sucks in warm air as it rises, in a similar way to that of a chimney. A heat sensor opens and closes a vent at the top of the stack to control the optimum temperature in the Sigma home.

Flood Proofing Houses

Dutch Floating Houses by DuraVermeer and WaterStudio In places like the Netherlands, where rising and falling sea levels are the norm, designers have been working on floating homes for a long time. DuraVermeer and WaterStudio are perfecting the art of homes that float on water, and some of their latest designs are for homes built on dry land that can float when the levels rise. While Brad Pitt's floating house only floats in case of emergency, these Dutch houses are designed to rise and fall almost daily.

Architectural Concrete Cathedral of Brazilia by Oscar Neimeyer This concrete-framed hyperboloid structure, appears with its glass roof to be reaching up, open, to heaven. Most of the cathedral is below ground, with only the 70-meter (230 ft) diameter 42-meter (138 ft) roof of the cathedral, the ovoid roof of the baptistry, and the bell tower visible above ground. The shape of the roof is based in a hyperboloid of revolution with asymmetric sections. The hyperboloid structure consists of 16 identical concrete columns assembled on site. These columns, having hyperbolic section and weighing 90 tonnes (99 tons), represent two hands moving upwards to heaven.

Bridges of the World Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, Brazil An asymmetrical bridge named after former Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek. The bridge is designed with three steel support arches leaping from side to side of the bridge, said to highlight Brasilia’s stunning sunsets. Couldn’t you just enjoy the sunsets without a bridge?

Bridges of the World Oresund Bridge, Sweden Forget building bridges just to cross a river, now we’re getting into other countries with them. The Oresund Bridge connects Denmark and Sweden. What’s unusual is that it starts out in Sweden as a bridge, and ends up a tunnel in Denmark. A small island had to be built around the tunnel’s entrance to stop water getting in.
