“Keep Turning Those Pages” Explained Claim: Physical books should not be replaced with e-readers. Supporting details: E-book readers are expensive and fragile. Lending e-books is not an option Looking at a screen can be hazardous Books are more pleasing.

#1: How does the descriptive information in paragraph 5 support the author’s purpose in this passage. Correct: B— The paragraph supports evidence that the e-reader is not as pleasurable to read as any paperback BECAUSE paragraph five brings up the hazards of staring into a screen, and “…started out as an activity of pleasure” Incorrect: A– because the paragraph did not suggest that e-readers are pleasurable to read Incorrect: C— because the only issue was with the strain on eyes, not numerous issues Incorrect: D— because the paragraph does not focus on physical issues

#2: Read paragraph 2 of the passage #2: Read paragraph 2 of the passage. What is the author’s purpose for including this paragraph in the passage? Correct: C—First, you had to know that the word calamity means disaster or tragedy. The author is saying that to leave a paperback in the sun or sand wouldn’t hurt it. Therefore, they are better. Incorrect: A, B, and D—the author says it is not a calamity to show he is okay with leaving a paperback. Paperbacks are better because they aren’t as valuable

Correct: C—the purpose was to support that paperback books are better Incorrect: A—this just says that people should consider which is better, but the author had a bias to paperback Incorrect: B—this is the opposite of the claim Incorrect: D—this is too vague. E-readers stink, not all technology.

#7: Which sentence is a statement of fact? Correct: A— Facts can be proven. It can be proven that “Technology has advanced modern society in a way that might have seemed implausible a mere thirty years ago.” Incorrect: B, C, and D– all are opinions and have opinion words like “easier,” “enjoyment,” and “I also find it extremely difficult”

“For the Fallen” Explained Synopsis: A speaker reflects on the deaths of England’s soldiers. It is suggested that the soldiers will be remembered fondly until the end of time. Theme: Those who give all, should always be remembered.

Correct: B— The personification of “England mourns for her dead” emphasizes the melancholy (sadness) of the country Incorrect: A— not a metaphor, not bitter Incorrect: C— not a metaphor Incorrect: D— doesn’t emphasize soldiers’ achievements

#9: Which two statements describe the speaker’s point of view regarding the soldiers? Correct: A and B—the poet admires their bravery and appreciates their sacrifices Incorrect: C, D, and E– the poet never insinuated any of this.

#10: Why does the poet use the euphemisms fallen (line 4) and sleep (line 20) for death? Euphemisms are a polite way to say something harsh. So euphemisms made the poem less harsh. Correct: C— the euphemisms make the poem less graphic and morbid Incorrect: A--- not more critical or dissapproving Incorrect: B--- not more vivid or descriptive Incorrect: D--- not less passionate and emotional

The author mainly used opinions as supportive reasoning. For example, the author states, “_________” and “_________”(Keep Turning 1). Both of these are examples of opinion used as fact. This is insufficient evidence to support that physical books are factually superior. This is also an example of a fallacious claim because________. Therefore, the author’s claim is not valid. The author’s claim in “Keep Turning Those Pages” is valid. The author used many facts as supportive reasoning. For example, the author states, “_________” and “_________”(Keep Turning 1). Both of these are examples facts. This is sufficient evidence to support that physical books are factually superior. Therefore, the author’s claim is valid.
