Basic First Aid Even when you are very careful, accidents sometimes happen DO NOW Brainstorm a list of items that should be included in a household first aid kit

What would you do? You notice that your friend has 2 small bandages on her fingers. She also has a bruised knee. “every time I go in the kitchen, I hurt myself” she says. “this morning I cut myself with a knife and hit my knee on an open drawer. Accidents just seem to happen to me!” How can you help your friend? What could she do to avoid accidents? What advice would you give her?

When an accident happens, you need to know what to do First Aid> Treatment given right after an accidents that helps to relieve pain and prevent further injury Knowing basic first aid can prevent further injury and relieve pain Giving first aid takes knowledge and skill. If you lack these, you can cause more harm to yourself or others

Small Cuts Falls Wash Area with soap and water Apply a mild antiseptic and bandage Falls Stop the bleeding If you think the victim has a broken bone, don’t move the victim. Get medical help Don’t let the victim eat or drink anything Do not leave the victim alone, unless you need to go for help

Deep Cut or Puncture Place a clean cloth or bandage over the wound Press on the cloth with the palm of your hand. The pressure should stop the bleeding Get medical help right away

Minor Burns Severe Burns Place the burned area in cool water. You also can wrap ice in a clean cloth and place it on the burned area. Keep the area cold until pain subsides If a blister forms, do not break it. This could cause an infection. Don’t apply grease or ointment. Severe Burns Keep the victim warm and lying down. Don’t put anything on the burn or try to remove any material stuck on the skin Get medical help right away

Electric shock Disconnect the appliance that caused the shock. Use a wooden broom handle or dry cloth to do this. Do not use metal. Never touch the victim or appliance with your bare hands. If you use metal or your bare hands, the electrical current will shock you. You will become a victim, too. If the person isn’t breathing give CPR or get medical help ASAP CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation)> A lifesaving technique that helps save a victim who isn’t breathing and whose heart has stopped

Poisoning Call 911 or a poison control center. Take the poison’s container with you to the phone. Carefully follow the directions given by the 911 staff. Antidote> A substance that works against a poison

Choking If a victim can’t speak or breathe perform the abdominal thrust. Abdominal thrust> Technique that can help save a choking victim This maneuver should not be used with infants and small children it can harm them Carbon monoxide> A colorless, odorless deadly gas

Recap Knowing basic first aid procedures can help you relieve an accident victim’s pain and prevent further injury. When serious injuries occur, know how to call for medical help and provide the information rescuers need to find and care for the victim

First Aid Scenarios You’re having a BBQ with some friends at your house. Some of them are messing around and one of them ends up falling and landing with his bare arm buried in the hot coals of the BBQ. He pulls his arm out, screaming. It’s badly burnt and he’s in a lot of pain What do you and your friends do to help him? List three things you should do. A group of you are at a friend’s house making sandwiches in the kitchen. One of your friends is slicing tomatoes with a kitchen knife. Suddenly, her hand slips and she drops the knife. It lands point down in her bare foot. The cut starts bleeding quite a bit and the knife is stuck in her foot What do you do to help her?

Check your Knowledge T/F _____ Charcoal grills produce a deadly gas called carbon monoxide T/F _____ CPR is a lifesaving method for people who are choking T/F _____ An antidote reverses the effect of a poison How can you tell if someone is choking? What might you find in a first aid kit?
