Annotated Bibliography “Chance favors the prepared mind.” You need either your personal laptop/tablet, or you may borrow one from the cart. Get logged in and go to the website.

What is an Annotated Bibliography? Watch the following video about Annotated Bibliographies. It is advisable to take notes on the content in your journal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV5nSXdMB60

Why do ABibs matter?? The Annotated Bibliography is going to be extremely important for all College Board Performance Tasks, as it will serve as a compendium for your research. The following are necessary components of an ABib:   R.A.V.E.N. analysis of credibility (You must RAVEN each source) Summary of source’s content (You have to READ the source to summarize it) Reflection on how this source will be used (i.e. how will you apply toward answering your Compelling Questions, how it elucidates a lens or perspective, how you will use it to develop a Line of Reasoning, etc.)

What will a typical ABib entry look like? The ABib must include a citation of each source in MLA format (Double spaced, Hanging indents, alphabetized, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, etc). See Purdue OWL for specific requirements for Citations ABib entries must contain the components listed on the previous slide combined into a well-written, clear paragraph of no more than 150 words. Entries must be alphabetized according to the citation. ABiB entries should only exist for sources you will actually use in your essays.

For Example**: Madsen, Laura. "Bird Intelligence." Appleseeds (2015): 4. MasterFILE Complete. Web. https://goo.gl/hvOmPB 18 Dec. 2016.   The author, Laura Madsen, is renown for collecting reliable data from resources, and she is known for being a trustworthy source of evidence. This article explains how birds, specifically Corvids, which are a family of birds including crows, ravens, jays and magpies, might be as smart as humans. They can learn how to use tactics, to store food, to steal food in times of need, and how to make tools. It explains how all these things contribute to a very high intelligence, and how it relates to a human’s intelligence.  This could be used to explain an overview of how smart birds really are, as well examples to show this. **This example is not double-spaced in order to fit on the slide. All entries must be double spaced.

Click HERE and read an actual Annotated Bibliography from last year.

Application (groups of 3 – 4) Each group must submit a Compelling Question based on the Evolution of Space Race that we have been discussing for approval. I will approve these shortly. Upon approval, the group must then develop a Research Action Plan (See handout) Once your group has developed a RAP, you must begin individualizing your research. Each member of the group should seek (2) sources of information that could be used to answer the Compelling Question based on the research focus established in the RAP. One source MUST be from a scholarly, academic journal. The other source MUST be deemed credible after RAVENing **See the next slide for research databases. DO NOT EXPECT TO SATISFY THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT BY SIMPLY GOOGLING. Each person will then compose a correct ABib entry for each of his/her sources. Your ABib will be submitted to Google Classroom when complete. Scholarly sources are those that are peer reviewed for veracity. The sources will generally come form domain specific journals. These journals are often produced in association with colleges and universities.
