Rhetorical Analysis and Growth Mindset Week 2

Reminders Office hours: Tuesday (1-4) and Wednesday (8-12) Rm 406 Need (!) textbook (First-Year Writing, 2017-2018, 11th Edition) Need to use Word documents when uploading to Blackboard (no Pages or Google Documents) No assignment due this Friday.

Email Greeting: Good morning, good afternoon, etc. (Ms. Drazan, Professor Drazan, etc.) Specific question, concern/context: think of time/day when sending email. Give me context so I know it is not an emergency. Please end email with your name. Please, please, please tell me what section you are in.

Review of Rhetorical Analysis Analyzing (not just what, but HOW) the rhetoric used by the writer. Identify specific (no general) audience Identify purpose (persuade/convince) Identify rhetorical choices used by writer to persuade/convince specific audience Determine if writer was effective with purpose

Helpful Ways to Identify Audience Check where article was published. Who reads that publication? Who is able to make the change the writer wants? Who needs to make the change the writer wants? Does the writer identify the audience him/herself?

Helpful Ways to Identify Purpose Check for “clues” in title of article. What problem/issue does the writer address? What is the writer’s solution for the problem/issue? Check the introduction/conclusion.

Helpful Resources Pages 10-11 in your First-Year Writing textbook However, instead of I/You put yourself in the audience’s shoes. Read articles at least twice. Highlight/take notes. Think of what rhetorical choices would be effective with the specific audience.

Growth Mindset Article Who is the audience? Why? What is the purpose? Why? What are some rhetorical choices used?

Any Questions?

Three Articles "Nothing is Missing" by Tom Munnecke (pgs. 422-428) "Lost in Translation" by Lera Boroditsky (pgs. 436-440) "The Internet: Is it Changing the Way We Think?" by John Naughton (pgs. 441-447) All in Chapter 23 of First-Year Writing textbook

(Informal) Homework DO NOT turn in on Blackboard. Bring to class next Tuesday (Sept. 12) on piece or paper or printed. Read all three articles (yes, all of them). Identify audience and purpose (for each one). Write brief summary of each article (5 sentences).

Summary Chapter 6, pgs. 129-133 (FYW) Need to identify who/what you are summarizing. Concise. Main points. Be fair and accurate. Give credit to author. Recap of main ideas in text (big picture). Summaries need to be all in your own words. No quotes.

Any Questions?

Growth Mindset TED Talk https://youtu.be/J-swZaKN2Ic

Questions about TED Talk What is growth mindset? How do you have a growth mindset? What is an area of English that you struggle with or could do better? Using a growth mindset, how could you improve that area? Besides English, what is another area in your life that you could use growth mindset and how?

Any Questions?

Before you leave… Read Chapter 6 pgs. 129-133 (FYW) as you work on your INFORMAL homework. Informal homework: Read all three articles. Identify audience and purpose (for each one). Write a brief summary of each article (5 sentences). No FORMAL assignment due this week! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. 
