FFA History

In the beginning… 1917: The Smith-Hughes Act establishes Vocational Agriculture Courses Future Farmers of Virginia is established as an organization for farm boys

That’s some good Barbecue! 1928: 33 Delegates from 18 states meet at the Hotel Baltimore in Kansas City, MO These delegates establish the Future Farmers of America Organization Leslie Applegate of New Jersey is the first president

More about the beginning Henry C. Groseclose is considered the founding father C.H. Lane was the first National Advisor Dues were set at 10 cents 1929: Carlton Patton from Arkansas is the first American Star Farmer

And we grew… 1930: Kentucky joins the National FFA 1933: Blue corduroy jacket adopted as official dress 1939: Land once owned by George Washington in Alexandria is purchased for the National FFA Headquarters

And grew some more… 1947-48: National Chorus and band established 1950: Public Law 740 gives FFA a federal charter 1953: President Dwight Eisenhower is the first president to attend National FFA Convention

The times, they are a changin’ 1965: FFA and NFA merge NFA was the New Farmers of America, a group for African-American Boys 1969: Girls are allowed into FFA

Change, change change 1988: Future Farmers of America changes its name to the National FFA Organization 1988: 7th and 8th graders are allowed to join 1998: National FFA Convention moves from Kansas City, MO to Louisville, KY 2000: Discovery degree is established for middle school members

Some Firsts 1974- Fred McClure from Texas is the first African-American elected as a National FFA Officer 1976- Julie Smiley from Washington is the first female elected as a National FFA Officer 1982- Jan Eberly from California becomes the first female National FFA president 1994- Corey Flournoy from Illinois becomes the first African-American National FFA President

FFA Today 507,000 members in National FFA 15,000 members in Kentucky FFA 2006: National Convention moves to Indianapolis Indiana National Headquarters are in Indianapolis, IN National Dues- $5.00, State- $5.00
