Collecting the data
Statutory Returns in SIMS Primary Collecting the data What is the difference between the Transaction database and the Warehouse database? The Transaction database is where all changes to data are immediately stored. It is inherently volatile. The Warehouse database is derived from the Transaction database via scheduled syncing (each 15 minutes except for attendance which is daily at midnight) and is structured for efficient reporting.

Statutory Returns in SIMS Primary Collecting the data Why use the Warehouse database as a source? In many cases Statutory Returns behave very much like a very specific type of reporting and in those cases the Warehouse database is often the most efficient source for the data However, the Warehouse database isn’t the only source of data for Statutory Returns and we will only use it when it is appropriate to do so
Statutory Returns in SIMS Primary Collecting the data Why use the Warehouse database as a source? In many cases Statutory Returns behave very much like a very specific type of reporting and in those cases the Warehouse database is often the most efficient source for the data However, the Warehouse database isn’t the only source of data for Statutory Returns and we will only use it when it is appropriate to do so We will only use the Warehouse database when it is appropriate to do so!
Statutory Returns in SIMS Primary Collecting the data We make use of data from three sources We provide facilities for the direct entry of data via the Statutory Returns application/tools where that data has no value outside of the Statutory Returns, e.g. top up funding. We collect data from the Transaction database where the data will be entered for the first time on the return reference date, e.g. attendance on return reference date. We collect data from the Warehouse database where it has almost certainly been entered previously and is unlikely to be changed except to correct errors, e.g. ethnicity.
Statutory Returns in SIMS Primary Collecting the data How up-to-date is the data in the Warehouse database? Attendance data in the Warehouse database is synced with the Transaction database on a daily basis (nightly at 12:00). Hence, we use it for the previous terms attendance data, but use the Transaction database for attendance on the return reference date. All other data in the Warehouse database is synced with the Transaction database every fifteen minutes. Hence, we believe it is suitable for most data other than attendance on the return reference date.

School Census Spring 2018 SIMS 7 DOAs for Academies Where: an academy database has been formed from the school it replaced, the establishment number for the academy is different to the school it replaced and the DOA from the school the academy replaced has been left in place, it is very important for the academy to indicate the earliest possible DOA for their pupils. Admissions and Leaving Dates
School Census Spring 2018 Admission and Leaving Dates Advice As we understand it, the DfE expects DOAs and DOLs to be set to days when the school is open to pupils, e.g. not holidays or staff training days If a school set a pupils DOA or DOL to a date when the school is not open to pupils attendance related DfE validation issues are likely to be triggered and the only way forward will be to either change the date or add a note to COLLECT
School Census Spring 2018 Admission and Leaving Dates Advice For example, in the Green Abbey training data the 01/09/2017 is an INSET day with the school closed to pupils and the 04/09/2017 is the first day when the school is open to pupils for the Autumn Term …
