Grade 10 Ceramics Unit 2: Slab Building and stamps

Sarah Pike

Considerations in hand building: -the seams – do you blend them out completely or leave the join standing out Breath in the vessel – add roundness from the inside

Rolling out the slab Use the slab roller and then use a rolling pin to get it to the thickness you desire. Or Roll your slab out onto a clean cement board using the wood sticks as a guide to get even thickness. Add texture as the slab is drying out a bit. You can’t use it right away because it the clay will be too soft and it will slump instead of standing up.

Adding texture Clay will show any texture that is rolled into it You can use a roller or stamp that you make, objects from nature such as wood, shells, leaves... Manufactured objects such as fabric, lace...

The Pattern Think about what you want to make and draft a pattern out of paper. Make sure that the pieces fit together. Ms. Lim has patterns for a jug and a box

Make sure that you 1) slip and score joins 2) cut the join at the appropriate angle (usu 45 degrees)

Open Slab Project After you make a mug (remember to make an extra one to donate), you can create whatever project you want using texture and slab.

A lid needs a lip either on the lid or on the body to hold the lid in place

Sarah Pike teapots

Or maybe you want to try a slab with a little more sculpture

Making a stamp 1) Think about the outside shape

2) Think about how deep you are carving the design

Make great designs because you will use them on your mug and open slab project.
