¿Qué hora es?

Telling Time in Spanish In Spanish, to ask “What time is it?”, you literally ask, “What is the hour?”. ¿Qué hora es?

¿Qué hora es? To respond, we use the verb SER, a feminine definite article (b/c “la hora” is fem.), and our #’s. Es la una.* Son las dos. * “Es” is used with ONLY the 1. “Son” is used with all other hours because they are plural.

Adding Minutes To add minutes, we simply use “y” (and). Es la una y cinco. (It’s 1:05) Son las ocho y veinte. (It’s 8:20)

Subtracting Minutes (__ till the next hour) To say it’s “so-many minutes till the next hour”, you bump up to the next hour and use MENOS to subtract the minutes. This can only be done if the minutes are past the 30 minute mark. 2: 50 -- Son las tres menos diez. 12:55 -- Es la una menos cinco.

Special Minute Markers For :15, :30, and :45, you have special ways of saying these markers. Like in English—quarter after, half-past, and quarter till. 9:15 – Son las nueve y cuarto. 11:30 – Son las once y media. 5: 45 – Son las seis menos cuarto.

AM and PM If we wish to add AM and PM in Spanish, we do so at the end of telling the time. Son las cinco de la mañana. (in the morning) Son las tres de la tarde. (in the afternoon) Son las diez y media de la noche. (at night)

Telling “At what time…” To tell what time an event is “at”, we use “a”. ¿A qué hora es la clase de español? La clase de español es a las nueve de la mañana.

Telling AM or PM w/o a Specific Time If you want to say something happens in the morning, afternoon, or at night without telling the specific time, replace “de” with “por”. La clase es por la mañana. El chico trabaja por la tarde. Nosotros estudiamos por la noche.

The “Equations” “It is ….” “at …” Es la Or Son las y Or menos AM PM + hour + + minutes + a la Or a las y Or menos AM PM minutes + hour + + +
