St Ignatius Catholic Primary School Welcome slide adapted for individual schools.

What is it? The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge. The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school. On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of bicycle and scooter journeys. Schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of bicycle and scooter journeys over two weeks.

Do you have a scooter or a bike? Next week try to scoot or cycle to school.

Lets scoot or cycle!!!! Its healthy Reasons to scoot or cycle: Its healthy Its a nice thing to do with your family Its better for the environment It reduces congestion at the school gates.

When is it? The competition runs from 18-29 April. Schools can take part for all ten days of the challenge but their best five days will decide their final position. We will be taking part next week. A schools best five days will determine their final position, but they can log journeys on all ten days if they wish. For schools unable to take part in the main challenge we also have a one-day version, which can include cycling and scooting activities in the school day as well as on the journey to school.

Who can take part? Teachers, parents and pupils are all able to take part in the challenge. You even get points if a sibling or parent cycles or scoots with you. Teachers, parents and pupils are able to take part in the challenge. Teachers who cycle or scoot to school and parents who accompany a child/children at school are recorded as supporter journeys. Last year 1,420,422 journeys were made to school by children in the UK.

What do we do? Cycle or scoot to school every day and encourage your friends, school staff and parents to do the same. Record your journeys on The Big Pedal website and try to increase your score each day. When registered, schools have their own homepage where they can record their journeys, see how many pupils have taken part and upload pictures throughout the event. If you have a roll size of 200 and 100 of them scoot or cycle to school, you would achieve a score of 50%. Children/Students can help to record the data for individual classes or the whole school.

Prizes There will be fantastic prizes up for grabs on every day of the challenge. Schools that score over 15% on each day will go into a hat to win a prize. Prizes range from bike and scooter stunt shows to fantastic cycle and scooter storage. The school/class that consistently record the highest percentage of pupils cycling or scooting to school will win their category and receive a personalised trophy and certificate. In 2016, there will be a prize draw on each day of the challenge. Schools that record over 15% will be included in the prize draw each day and be in with a chance to win a prize for their school.

Good luck!
