The Great Lakes Sydney Wang

Welcome! Welcome to the Great Lakes of America! Today, we’ll go on a journey while I lecture you until you fall asleep! Just Kidding! It’s too fun here to bore you to death. Here’s a fact! They were made from glaciers that were from the Ice Age that melted over time. Honestly, you need know about these beautiful sights. You haven’t lived if you didn’t try it. Why am I still talking? Let’s Go! First, we go to Lake Superior!

Lake Superior We’ve just arrived at Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. The surface is 31,700 miles long! Wow! It contains more water than all the other lakes COMBINED! This lake is the cleanest and clearest of all Great Lakes. It also has over 400 Islands! It’s also one of the youngest major features from the Earth. It’s not only beautiful, it helps the environment too. This beauty holds 88 species of fish in it. That’s because it contains 20% of the Earth’s fresh water. That’s all you probably need to know. On to Lake Huron and we LLLEEEEEEEEEAAAVVVVVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lake Huron Meet Lake Huron. This lake is what forms the mitten shape for Michigan. This is the fifth largest freshwater lake in the world. This lake is 23,000 square miles long. This lake has 3000 islands. This place used to have 120 lighthouses. It’s interesting that many storms happen here. This is known as a very dangerous place to sail in. Over 1000 shipwrecks are at Lake Huron. There are also very forested areas. There’s also lots of fish as many people like to go fishing there. Next, I believe is Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan Lake Michigan is the third largest Great Lake. It’s derived from an Ojibwa word meaning large lake. The surface is 22,300 square miles long. Lake Michigan touches Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Approximately 12 million people live along the shores of Lake Michigan. Major port cities include Chicago, Illinois, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Gary, Indiana. This lake is home to many birds and fish. This formed about 1.2 billion years ago, when tectonic plates ripped apart, causing a rift. Next, we meet Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario My name is Ontario and I start with the word lake. What is my name? Congrats! Welcome to Lake Ontario! This is the smallest Great Lake at 7430 miles long. This is probably the most polluted lake of all of the lakes. This comes from the Iroquois word meaning a beautiful lake. This is also home to many fish and many fruit trees. Many migrating birds live there too. This lake is typically warm and probably will never freeze over. Next is Lake Erie. OOOOOOOOooH!

Lake Erie It’s a little weird here. It’s the warmest of all Great Lakes but freezes over more often than the rest of the lakes. This is 9940 square miles large. It touches 4 U.S. states- New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. It also goes along Ontario, Canada. This lake is really young, at 4000 years old. The Battle of Lake Erie took place off the north shore on Sept. 10, 1813.

Should it be a Natural Wonder I think it should be a natural wonder because it’s very unique because it holds ⅕ of the world’s freshwater, at 6 quadrillion gallons of water. It’s called the Great Lakes, why not call it a wonder. This is unique in its own way where it’s relatively large and important to us because these are a source into rivers where we get our water supply from. Forget Victoria Falls, they are both beautiful, both very interesting and unusual, but Victoria Falls does NOT supply people’s water. I hope you enjoyed my powerpoint.
