In September we will be exploring the value of SELF CONTROL

Knowing right from wrong – and acting on it! SELF CONTROL Knowing right from wrong – and acting on it! Willpower Self- discipline Conscientiousness 8

Which song about SELF CONTROL do you like best – and why?

Managing your mind and your emotions SELF CONTROL Managing your mind and your emotions 10

These 2 parts of the brain developed first The Chimp The Human These 2 parts of the brain developed first Either one could run your life on its own but when they try to work together, there may be problems! They think in different ways – it’s like 2 different people being in your head 11

Takes action based on feelings and impressions The Human The Chimp Emotional thinking Takes action based on feelings and impressions You have to learn to control it Logical thinking Looks for the truth and facts Takes action based on calm thoughts Both can function well separately but have trouble working together 12

SELF CONTROL Manage Your Chimp (for KS2 – and grown ups too!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6bHxhfJGIU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdsULCgqflE 13

Both parts of the brain react to every situation – but in different ways. Both are thinking what to do about it – but some of the time they don’t agree. The Chimp is more powerful than the Human and will win – UNLESS you have learnt how to manage it! 14

Jumps quickly to an opinion Over reacts Jumps quickly to an opinion Can be ‘paranoid’ (worries about things that aren’t real’) Doesn’t wait for all the information Very quick to judge Emotional Can twist the facts to suit its opinion 15

Open minded, sees others points of view Thinks calmly Open minded, sees others points of view Uses reasoning skills to work things out Searches for all the relevant information Uses ‘common sense’- is rational Logical Looks for the truth and facts, then acts on this 16

The Human must learn to recognise when the Chimp is in charge The Human must learn to recognise when the Chimp is in charge. Don’t try to control it – but learn to manage it! The Chimp is an emotional machine that will take over if you allow it to. It is not good or bad – it is a Chimp! 17

Let’s think about some ways to help yourself when you need to use SELF CONTROL? STOP! Take some deep breaths Talk to someone you trust Get some more information, think harder

Your Human part of your brain can help you to manage your Chimp – it can help you with SELF CONTROL?

This is just a tiny part of what Dr Peters’ work tells us This is just a tiny part of what Dr Peters’ work tells us. There’s much more to learn if we’d like to… Dr Steve Peters http://chimpmanagement.com/ 20

When I have lost my temper I have lost my reason too, Self Control When I have lost my temper I have lost my reason too, I’m never proud of anything Which angrily I do. When I have talked in anger And my cheeks are flaming red, I have always uttered something Which I wish I had not said. In anger I have never Done a kindly deed or wise. But many things for which I felt I should apologise. In looking back across my life And all I’ve lost or made, I can’t recall a single time When fury ever paid.

A value is a principle that guides our thinking and behaviour How does SELF CONTROL do this?

A quiet moment of reflection... SELF CONTROL

What kind of situations do you find yourself in when SELF CONTROL is hard?

(Think about when you are tired or fed up). Is it more difficult to ‘be in control’ at certain times or under certain conditions? (Think about when you are tired or fed up).

What pushes ‘your buttons’?

What can you do to manage your emotions better when you need to?

What other values link to SELF CONTROL? Can you explain how?

Can you recognise your ‘Chimp’? You may want to call it something else depending on how it behaves.
