The Principles of Design Arrangement of the Elements of art. Artists use them with intention to create pleasing compositions.

BALANCE Creates stability in an artwork. Alexander Calder Visual weight, how things are distributed Creates stability in an artwork. Alexander Calder

1. Symmetrical Balance The parts of an image are organized so that one side mirrors the other.

2. Asymmetrical Balance When one side of a composition does not reflect the design of the other. James Whistler

3. Radial Balance Radial balance occurs when all the elements radiate out from a central point and everything is equally distributed.

What kind of balance?

What kind of balance?

CONTRAST When two opposite elements (ex: light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) are placed next to each other to stand out and create emphasis.

What creates the contrast in this image?

EMPHASIS The focal point of an image, or when one thing to stands out above others. Typically the most important. Uses contrast and extra detail (differences in size, color, value, etc.) to make objects stand out. Jim Dine Gustav Klimt

Where is the emphasis?

RHYTHM  and MOVEMENT Rhythm uses repeating objects in different positions to create a mood like music or dancing/or to show movement. Marcel Duchamp

Rhythm and movement can guide your eye from one part of the canvas to another, it can create a feeling of movement in a still artwork Vincent VanGogh

PATTERN Gustav Klimt Repeated surface decoration. It can be random, repeated, or alternating.

PROPORTION/scale When comparing objects in an art work using size, quantity, or degree.

Leonardo Davinci studied proportion in the human body Leonardo Davinci studied proportion in the human body. Proportion can refer to “keeping things in proportion” to make realistic portraits. Anime and cartoon artists sometimes intentionally play with proportion

UNITY/Harmony When all the elements work together to support the design as a whole. Gives a feeling of completeness. Usually by using repetition and sameness (color, size, etc.)
