Presentation transcript:

Water Design Challenge Design and build a device that helps us live with the water around us. You will have a choice of 4 project ideas to choose from. A device to make safe drinking water Structures to prevent damage from water Structures to produce energy from water A device to contain and clean up oil spills

#1 - A device to make safe drinking water Design Brief - design and build an inexpensive device for separating and collecting fresh water from sea water or polluted water. Design Criteria - Sunlight must be the only source of energy. The device must have a collection system for gathering the fresh water from an impure sample. Make a plan for disposal of the salt or residue that remains.

#2 - Structures to prevent damage from water Design Brief - design a product that will stabilize shorelines and reduce the erosion effects of wave action. Build a working model of your erosion control. Design Criteria - Your model must include: A soil or sand-based shoreline. Water, with waves striking the shore at different angles. A scale model of the structure (s) used to stabilize the shore. The model must visibly demonstrate wave actions.. Items clearly labeled.

#3 - Structures to produce energy from water Design Brief - design a device that could generate power from the movement of water. Build a model of the device in its proposed setting. The model does not need to be a working model. However the idea of what is moving to generate power should be easily understood. Design Criteria - Your model must include: The device in the proper location and setting where it will generate power. A scale model of the device. Moving parts in area that will generate power. (actual water does not need to make contact with the model to show how it works.) Items clearly labeled.

#4 - A device to contain and cleanup oil spills Design Brief - design a device that will surround and absorb a simulated oil spill. This challenge might involve two steps. A model of the containment device. The clean-up process itself. Design Criteria - Your model must include: The model must be able to contain a simulated oil spill Remove as much of the oil and as little of the water as possible. Vegetable is to be used, NOT motor oil.

Assessment Understanding the problem Develop a safe plan Choose and safely use appropriate materials, tools and equipment Test and record results Evaluate your model, including suggestions for improvement Prepare a presentation Use correct terms Write clear descriptions of the steps you took in building and testing your model.

Assessment Have your plan approved by me before you begin. Explain clearly how your model solves the problem. Make an accurate technical drawing for your model Meet the design criteria with your model Use your chosen materials effectively Solve the identified problem. Have your plan approved by me before you begin.
