The roles and goals of Clemenceau in creating the Treaty of Versailles Who was Georges Clemenceau? What roles he played? What were his goals in creationg treaty of Versailles?

Georges Clemenceau In this room you are able to see Gorges Clemenceau’s life. His time of glory and his defeat. Who he really was and what roles he played during his political career?

What were his goals in creation the Treaty of Versailles? Clamenceau beliefe that the responsibility for the Great War is all Germans. Was it only one reason for his anger to this country? And what kind of punishment did he want to give to Germany? All this informations find in this room.

What roles he played? Georges Clemenceau’s point of view to the peace in 1918 didn’t work. His ideas didn’t got a support form other Allied leaders. Why? And was were the consequences of the Treaty? Have a look in this room.

By January 1920, his political star had eclipsed and the French public held him responsible for the perceived leniency of the Versailles Settlement. In his retirement he constantly preached spoke and wrote against the dangers of a resurgent Germany. He became very disillusioned with European diplomacy which became most apparent in his memoirs "The Grandeur and Misery". Georges Clemenceau even predicted that 1940 would be the year that France was in its gravest danger from Germany. Georges Clemenceau died in 1929.

Liberal prime minister David Lloyd George (left) at Versailles with the French prime minister Georges Clemenceau and the US president Woodrow Wilson. Georges Clemenceau was one of the three fathers of the Versailles Treaty. However his opinion about the Treaty and the punishment for Germany was quite different to the David Lloyd George and Woodrow Wilson. This made a conflicts between France and other Allies.

Europe after World War I The Treaty of Versailles divided Europe in the new way. It was very unsatisfactory for France. Germany was left with the great territories and string economical areas.

Georges Clemenceau's attitudes to the USA Clemenceau was disappointed about the American opinion about the punishment for Germany. He believed that their believed are caused by the historical events that America never expired the occupation and the Great War on their own nation and land. And this is a reason why Wilston Woodrow ignore his opinion. ”America is the only nation in history which miraculously has gone directly from barbarism to denigration without the usual interval of civilization.” Gorges Clemenceau

”Georges Clemenceau of France had one very simple belief - Germany should be brought to its knees so that she could never start a war again.” (David Robin Watson ”GEORGES CLEMENCEAU- A Political Biography” Eyrne Methuen, p.28) This reflected the views of the French public but it was also what Clemenceau himself believed in. He had seen the north-east corner of France destroyed and he determined that Germany should never be allowed to do this again. "The Tiger" did not have to adapt his policies to suit the French public - the French leader and the French public both thought alike.
