Poems about poems…

What makes a good poem? 2 minutes- make a list. Go! Personal poems are more interesting than public ones. A good poem has to express somehow a feeling that we all recognise.

‘Gambler’ Compared to ‘A Dreaming Week’ as both are concerned about the process of writing poetry.

Gambler Hyperion’s tips refers to a mythological Titan from an unfinished narrative poem by John Keats. Hyperion is associated with creativity and poetry. Hyperion’s tips could refer to advice on writing poetry Duffy merges images of poetry with betting (‘tips’) to show that writing poetry is a gamble Extended joke that instead of studying the ‘form’ of horses, she is studying the form of poetry. Is Duffy saying that prior performance and tradition is less important than people think? A poetic ‘manifesto’

Poetic Manifesto ‘Lyrical Ballads’ by Wordsworth and Coleridge argues that: -poetry should be accessible to common people -poetry should stem from a spontaneous flow of powerful feelings -a poet is like a prophet who has privileged knowledge of nature and the universe -poetry is more philosophical than other art forms What is Duffy’s ‘manifesto’ in ‘A Dreaming Week’ and ‘Gambler’?
