907: Mobilization: Homefront and Abroad 3/21

To what extent is World War I an example of total war? Any questions from the homework?

Here’s our question for the day: US involvement in World War I from 1917-1918 , involved more than military commitment. Analyze the extent to which US involvement in WWI mobilized economic, social, and political elements of the United States, using the following documents and your knowledge of US history.

Schenck v. United States (1919) S.C. case which rules that free speech can be limited in the case of clear and present danger.

Selective Services Act of 1917 An attempt to “democratize” service by selecting from all demographics Lottery Draft

Meanwhile on the Western Front, there’s a stalemate…

New technological advances Submarines Tanks Machine guns Grenades Mustard gas Trench Warfare 16 million dead 20 million wounded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ciq9ts02ci4

Practice Let’s go through these documents first summarize them (1-2 sentences) and then and ask ourselves to what extent this is an example of total war or full mobilization. (mark each with a Y for yes or N for no

US involvement in World War I from 1917-1918 , involved more than military commitment. Is this true? Explain, citing at least two documents.
