UNIT 1 Matter Day 14 Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Atoms 8th Grade Science
Unit 1 Matter Day 14 Focus: Atoms 9/19/17 Pick up the 2 sheets of element cards and the 2 ½ sheets on atom diagrams from the front lab table. Elements of the Day 2. Open a textbook to pages 242-243. On your element cards, fill in the following information for B (Boron): Atomic number Element name Atomic mass # of protons, neutrons, electrons Solid, liquid or gas (use the key in the book)
Let’s organize things in your notebook. Please quickly do the following: Place the 2 sheets of element cards in the front or back pocket of your binder. Don’t lose them. We will work on them each day, and they are for a project in a few days. Tape the Bohr model practice sheet onto page 13 but leave room to answer the E.Q. in a minute. Tape the Bohr/Lewis diagram sheet onto page 14. Make sure you can fold it out to see and work on both sides of it. CFA’s on p. 12.
Turn and talk: Discuss with your group members and answer yesterday’s E.Q. Stay on topic and hurry!
Plan for the Day E.Q. Review homework Lesson on atom drawings-Bohr Diagrams of the Atom a. PowerPoint and explanation b. Practice 4. Wrap-up
Homework: Draw Bohr diagram for Boron on your element card. Finish the Bohr diagrams on the Bohr Diagram worksheet for hmwk tonight. Flash cards 18-21 due tomorrow. You will need to start bringing your own colored pencils Friday.
Essential Question – How is the arrangement of electrons in the atom related to an element’s location on the Periodic Table?
Let’s learn how to draw diagrams of the atom – Turn to page 14 in your binder. There are a few notes to take. Periodic Table - Bohr Diagram.ppt
What does the atom have to do with the periodic table of the elements? If time permits, we’ll conduct formative assessment on the content from today. Wrap-up: What does the atom have to do with the periodic table of the elements?
