Unit Two: Researching Visual Material Meghan Truscott

Image Concept One The reason I find myself so fascinated with her work is because I see the stories within her art. When I look at her photos I feel as though I’m lost in an alternate fantasy land. These photos in particular also remind me of Autumn. The way the photos flow of elegance and nature, reminds me of the transformation of Summer to Autumn. As well as the rich colours or orange and browns. These image I gathered are from the internet. The photographer behind the idea is Kirsty Mitchell. I was introduced to her work last year, when she came in and did a talk with my class, I instantly fell in love with her work. Her work began in 2009. It started of as a project to distract herself from the loss of her mother, whom past in November 2008. Her mother was an English teacher, who loved to read and create stories. Kirsty used her camera to escape grief, by entering a portal of the same escape her mother did, stories. Her small project became a piece of beautiful art, that everyone now enjoys. Her work is dedicated to her mother. The whole project is named ‘Wonderland’. https://kirstymitchellphotography.com/galleries/wonderland/the-story-behind-wonderland/ https://kirstymitchellphotography.com/galleries/wonderland/

Image Concept Two These images were found in the library, within various books based on Queen Elizabeth I. She came to mind when I thought of Autumn. First of all because of her hair colour. That bold fiery orange, reminds me of the crispness of Autumn. Queen Elizabeth had many other names, one of those being “Gloriana”, which means grace. To me Autumn is a graceful season, the way the green leaves fall and the orange replaces it. How the cool crisp air gracefully follows you. Not only that but Queen Elizabeth was a change for British History, being the first woman to rule without a man. Just like Autumn is a change, going from the hotness of summer to the coolness of Autumn. This image is named the ‘Ditchley Portrait’. Created by Marcus Gheerarets, for Sir Henry Lee, who had been the Queens Champion from 1559-90. The picture shows Queen Elizabeth I, standing on the globe, as at that time countries were fighting to own the world, as of their new technology that made it capable travelling to different countries, to claim as their own. It shows that Elizabeth believes she is the controller of the world. Behind her is an Latin testament, saying things such as she is giver and not a taker, making her sound like a graceful woman. The sky reminds me of Autumn in reverse, like rather than the dark seeking through the Summer sky, but the summer sky seeking through the Autumn sky. http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw02079/Queen-Elizabeth-I-The-Ditchley-portrait This is an image from the film, ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’, released in 2007. Cate Blanchett is the actress who plays Queen Elizabeth I. The film follows her life challenges, like Mary’s assassination plot, The Spanish Armada, and heart breaks. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414055/ https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/1b/71/b9/1b71b96ff8ac4fc6c57092988baee189.jpg

Image Concept Three I found these images within the library, in a book named, ‘The Encyclopaedia of Mammals’, by David Macdonald. I chose the orangutans as they’re an unusual species. Firstly, their coats are the typical ravishing colour of orange like Autumn. But also Autumn reminds me of death, however also the rebirth of life. That’s why I chose the picture of two baby orangutans and the orangutan enclosed in a cage. To represent something ending, and something beginning. But these animals typically belong in the jungle, to me Autumn gives of an jungle like affect, the trees are grown and full of oranges, browns and greens. The animals are noisy as they head off to a warmer content, before Autumn changes to Winter. David Whyte Macdonald is an Scottish zoologist and conservationist. He is the Director of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, Oxford University, which he founded in 1986. He has written many books apart of his collection of The Encyclopaedia of Mammals, books that are very popular when researching mammals. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Macdonald_(biologist)
