Year 5 residential trip to York Wednesday 1st February – Thursday 2nd February 2017

‘Were the Vikings always victorious and vicious? The WOW factor! The trip to York will provide an exciting entry point into our Learning Challenge: ‘Were the Vikings always victorious and vicious? Children will get the chance to explore questions such as; Who were the Vikings and what were they like? Who did the Vikings invade and why did they settle? Why did the Vikings choose York? What was life like in Danelaw and in Jorvik?

Learning across the curriculum We will be taking a class camera with us so that the children can capture images to support their learning back at school. Design and Technology – we will be making our own Viking Longboats! Writing with purpose – lots of opportunities afterwards to write about our learning on the Vikings. Religious Education – we will be learning about and visiting a Christian place of worship -York Minster History and Geography will underpin much of what we do in this learning challenge. However, there wil be much more to it than that, both during the visit and when we return to school. We will be making stop-motion animations using footage gathered on the trip, as well as the model boats made in DT. Literacy will involve writing recounts about the trip, persuasive writing, Horrible Histories style, focussing on whether or not the Vikings really were vicious!

Group Leaders Mrs Meek Ms Haynes (First aider) Ms Huggins (First aider) Mrs Hague (First aider) Adult / child ratio = 1:8 Each adult will be responsible for a named group of children at Murton Park and the whole class will remain as one group at other times.
