October is the first month of the Book-it! program. I have included a calendar where students are to color a pumpkin for every 15-20 minutes they read. This can include homework and recreational reading. If students color at least 18 pumpkins in the month of October, they will receive a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut! Have fun reading and return the Book-It! calendar at the end of the month. YUM!! Our classroom is starting to build a wonderful bond and they are working so well together. I have a very smart, kind, and well-mannered bunch of kiddos! This year is going to be so wonderful! Last month we finished our unit study on germs and I hope the students use what they learned to keep those pesky things away!!! We also started our “Me on the Map” unit, which will allow students to know exactly where their special place is in the world. Your child brought home a packet on Monday that includes all of the information in regards to our school fundraiser. The PTA fundraiser is not required. This fundraising effort will go directly to the PTA, which helps fund all of our field trips and fun school activities! (FYI- PTA is always in need of members and volunteers) Homework- I understand families get busy and students are involved in other activities. I encourage you all to spend time together each night. Second graders should only be spending a minimum of 10-20 minutes a night reading, completing one page of math for the week, and 5-10 minutes practicing their spelling words each night. Homework time should be about 20-30 minutes each night. Also, parents, if you are wanting to volunteer in the school or on field trips you will need to fill out the volunteer form and complete the background check found on the district website. Please let me know if you would like to join us on our field trip, as we have limited bus space. Olweus Bulling Program The Olweus kick-off was so fun! We are now implementing the Olweus curriculum into our classroom and doing class meetings every Friday. Building #2 would like for each student to wear their Hellgate Hawk Shirt every Friday!! The shirts are a great reminder to be kind to each other and “Be the 1”. Mrs. Dennehy, our school counselor is teaching the class how to solve small problems vs. big problems this month!! September MBI Winners Eli A. and Caprice were the winners of the Respectful Award! Great job you two!  October’s theme is Safety and Responsibility.
