Codes and Conventions of Film Posters.
Content In these two film poster that I have chosen, Star wars and Blade Runner there were slight similarities. Both film genres are both sci-fi, which you can clearly see from the background images. The first image Star Wars The Force Awaken shows that the film would contain a lot of action because of the massive explosion shown on the spaceships. The image also shows about eight different main characters within the film, with the emphasis on the most important being Rey the female character on the middle and kylo Ren being shown as evil than the rest like his taking over. The same goes for Blade runner showing that Rick is the most important by placing him in the middle. Blade Runner 2049 is set in the year 2049 set thirty years after the first film, a new blade runner, office K has returned and has found out a new secret that would have potential to plunge what's left of society in chaos. This discovery would lead him on a quest to find former blade runner Rick who has been missing for 30 years. Star Wars The Force Awaken was set 30 years after the defeat of Darth Vader and the Empire. Rey a new character is an scavenger who finds a droid that would know the location of the long lost Luke Skywalker.
Written Language On both of the posters Blade Runner and Star wars you can see that the credits are placed at the bottom. On the star wars poster you can see the actors name, the director, producer and the music being played by this font is shown bigger on the page this would be a way to try entice the audience to watch the film as if these actors, producer and director are popular or I they liked the actors they may want to see them perform. As for Blade runner they only added one big font with actors name called Harrison Ford this is shown here because he may be a popular actor that the audience may want to see. ‘May the Force be with you.’ This dialogue is shown on the top right Corner of the poster to encourage the audience to watch the film, this also tells us that it’s a sci-fi.
Typography On the first poster Blade runner you can see that ‘Blade Runner’ font at the bottom of the poster is larger than the older film posters this title may entice the audience who had enjoyed the late 80s franchise to watch the new one. However this would also make the theme of the film very clear to the audience. As for the Rouge One you can clearly see that the ‘star wars story’ labeled at the bottom would state that it is prequel due to font being smaller than the main title.
Photographs & Illustrations This film poster uses a donut ring shape in exchange of the letter ‘O’ which would create some sort of comedy for the audience to watch, this is also effective as Homer Simpson on of the main characters, is well known for eating a lot of doughnuts, this also known for his love of doughnuts. There's also a giant wrecking ball showing Homer Simpson getting smacked by sending him flying is also very funny because from one image you can see the type of person Homer is this is referred as immature. On the second poster of the film Titanic you can clearly see that the female character with the hat is being shown with the Titanic ship on top of her head you can also see the ship clearly tilting on her head, this obviously foreshadows the movie for the audience for people who didn’t know what happened.
Representations On the first image of star wars the empire strikes bac you can clearly see the galaxy in the background which you can guess that it is Sci-Fi, however the images being show represents the genre. All the distributors copyright information and crew are being shown on the bottom of the poster for audiences to see such as the actors, however some are so tiny that you wont be able to read this would mean that this info isn’t important. Images of the main characters are being shown on the middle of the poster. On top of the poster it says ‘the star wars saga continues ‘ this would entice the audience to watch it if they really enjoyed the previous ones.
20th & 21st Century Posters Comparison On both the 20th and 21st century poster they have some similar generic conventions, both of the Alien poster shows a title of the film and the genres are clearly represented just by looking at the images used on them. However the 20th century poster doesn’t show the release date of the film but on the 21st there is one shown on the bottom of the poster, this may be because it was the first film in the franchise. On both film posters there's a small print of the producers and distributors of the film which is a convention that seems to be shown on most posters. AS for the 20th century theirs a catchy slogan shown on the bottom it say ‘in space no one can hear you in scream’ this also presents the genre.
Colour Schemes On the scream poster the colour scheme being shown are red, black and white. The first colour red on the number 4 and the ghost symbolizes danger, blood, death and murder. The colour black can symbolize the death of someone like a funeral, the black can symbolize the loss of hope, something freighting and fear. Finally the colour white may symbolize something mysterious or the past of someone's life like a memory. All the colors on this poster would relate to it being a thriller/horror due to the connotation being shown. As for the Star Wars the force awaken you can clearly see that the light sabers mean something the colour Red would connotate death or evil and the colour blue would show peace something joyful. Both sides shows something in a different perspective one side being evil and the other being good.
Alternate Posters. 1 Film posters always contain images which is what audiences would like to see when the poster catches their eye. On both of these alternate posters you can see the characters shots they always contain some type of iconography to reveal the film genre and something about the film. The images show also portray a narrative of the film. The first poster Star wars shows the main villain Darth Vader's outline of his mask and the galaxy shown inside this tells us again about what genre it is. The second alternate poster of Batman the dark knight shows one of the good character Batman and the bad side of villain the Joker, this also presents them being the main characters on the film. In both The Dark knight posters you can clearly see that the original poster illustrates an photo of main character Batman by himself compared to the alternate posters it already tells the audience who the villain is going to be for the film. As for Star Wars poster you can see that on the original poster there’s many image showing different characters and Darth Vader at the top this illustrates that his in control of everything just like the alternate poster. 2
