Make sure you put today’s date and the heading: Coraline ch 1 through 4 review part 1

Review The following review will ask you to both analyze and recall key events from the first five four chapters of the story During this review, please do not call out or make obnoxious noises while raising your hand. thanks Participate and enjoy!

What did Misses Spink and Forcible do for a living when they were younger?

The crazy old man upstairs has a circus made of what?

There was a haughty black cat, who sat on walls and tree stumps and watched her… Based off of what we know about the cat, what do you think haughty means?

“On the first day Coraline’s family moved in, Miss Spink and Miss Forcible made a point of telling Coraline how dangerous the well was…” In fiction, a warning is usually an example of this type of literary device…

In chapter 1, in her boredom, Coraline watches a natural history program that she finds interesting…what is it about?? How do Coraline’s parents react when she tells them she is bored?

Where does the drawing room door lead?

From page 9 She shut the door and put the string of keys back on top of the kitchen doorframe. “You didn’t lock it,” said Coraline. Her mother shrugged. “Why should I lock it? She asked. “It doesn’t go anywhere.”

Why does Coraline go to the drawing room at the end of chapter 1?

Chapter 2 “Coraline put on her blue coat with a hood, her red scarf, and her yellow Wellington boots.” What does Coraline’s wardrobe tell us about her?

Page 15 What does Coraline refer to herself as in chapter two?

The crazy old man and the two former actresses repeatedly call Coraline “Caroline”. But, aside from her parents, someone (or something(s)) gets her name right. Who?

Why does Coraline listen to her parents whenever they give her suggestions to alleviate her boredom? Counts things in flats, goes and visits neighbors, etc Do parents always know best?

Why do the actresses think that Coraline is in danger?

What are their first names? “Oh dear,” she said. “You were right, April. She is in danger.” See, Miriam,” said Miss Spink triumphantly. “My eyes are as good as they ever were…”

Chapter 3 What article of clothing does Coraline request during her shopping trip with her Mom? In what country does this story take place?

Once her mother leaves for groceries, how does Coraline obtain the key for the drawing room from the kitchen doorframe?

“But now the expression on his face was different– he was looking at the bubbles as if he was planning to do something very nasty indeed to them.” This is the first difference we are given between Coraline’s world and the other mother’s. What hint are you given about Coraline’s new world here?

What is different about Coraline’s other mother?

What are some other differences in Coraline’s new world?

“Coraline got down on her knees and looked under the bed “Coraline got down on her knees and looked under the bed. Fifty little red eyes stared back at her.” How many rats were under Coraline’s bed?

Chapter 4 According to the haughty cat, why don’t cats have names, but people do?

What is different about Miss Spink and Miss Forcible and the world in which they live? Three things…

What must Coraline do if she wishes to stay in the other mother’s world?

Chapter 5
