Why A Great Resume is Needed See Article “Nurses Are Talking About: Jobs For New Grads” by Stokowski from medscape.com Published 12/12/2011

Jobs For New Grads “The Big Lie”: The job you want is waiting for you! Employers are hiring experienced nurses No experience, no job, no money, student loans not paid Student loans for nursing may stop

Some Tips Look for Community jobs Look outside your community Ambulatory surgery, LTCF, Home health care Look outside your community Start on the BSN (if the money is there) Military nursing

Quote “All the jobs in this area require experience & it is not possible to start my career without it. I am considering continuing my education until I can get a job. What is my alternative—flipping burgers or waiting tables after fighting so hard to get into a nursing program, passing with honors, and finding that those promised jobs are not here any longer?”

Resume The first impression you make on an employer Highlights your accomplishments Should be very neat and professional looking Prepare on a computer Should be no more than 2 pages (1 page is better) Divide sections: work experience, why do you want the job

SWOT Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats

resume Sell yourself in 15-30 seconds Proofread Itemize your educational experience State objectives What can you do for the employer Legible Action verbs (management, communication, accomplishments, helping skills)

portfolio Second section: Philosophy MNA Standards: Skills (optional) Include those things that will make you valuable to an employer (organized, good communication skills, etc.) Third section: Personal information: resume, cover letter, Experience (work history) List chronologically with most recent first Include name of organization, dates employed Name position and briefly list responsibilities Include non-healthcare references only if they demonstrate some key skill (e.g., supervised five employees at Big Burger, Inc.) Explain any long gaps (6 months or more) between employment (e.g., attending college)

portfolio Fourth section: APA paper (you can use your paper for this class after it is graded and given back so you can correct anything)

portfolio Fifth section: Awards (optional) Professional Memberships List any awards (especially health-related), date received, and reason for award (briefly) Professional Memberships List any memberships in professional organizations—nursing student organizations count! References
