Walking With God Genesis 5.18-24 Walking With God. (Bill Sexton, 802 Adeline Lane, Van Buren, AR 72956-3530 Phone 501-474-2617)   Text: Gen. 5: 18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died. 21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Introduction: Human life is often represented as a COURSE or WAY. Activities spoken of as WALKING! "Walks of life." IDEA: The privilege and Possibility! Example of dogs with their masters and children with their father. A. The idea of being a companion with God the Creator and Governor of the universe, what a great idea! B. The possibility that I can so walk, is exciting to me and I hope to you! Genesis 5.18-24

Walking With God Genesis 5.18-24 C. Evidence is that you and I, and anyone who wishes to, can WALK WITH GOD! 1. You might look for the word "walk" in the New Testament and see how many times it refers to the conduct, course, of one's endeavor! 2. See if you can determine that all are walking with one of two companions! a. God -- the good, "straight and narrow" restrained and disciplined, constructive! (Matt.7:14) b. Satan -- the evil, "The wide and broad," unrestrained and destructive! (Matt 7:13) Individual --Enoch! The Man of Our Text "Walked with God" A. Fact --He did! Scripture says Genesis 5.18-24

Walking With God Genesis 5.18-24 B. Benefit of -- praise in the scriptures, God took Him! No longer found among men! 1. One of two who didn't experience death. 2. Elijah, the other. (2 Kings 2:9-11) C. There are benefits — "God Took Him" -- God will receive those who thus WALK! D. Companionship Heb 13:5-6 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear;what can man do to me?" (ESVST) Jn 14:23 Jesus answered him, " If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (ESVST) 2Jo 1:9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. (ESVST) Genesis 5.18-24

Walking With God Genesis 5.18-24 Shall Be with Rev 3:4 Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. (ESVST) Rev 7:9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, (ESVST)   NOAH Also walked with God Gen. 6:9 — did not perish with the rest! (He and his house were saved) Genesis 5.18-24

Involved in Walking With God? Heb. 11:5:"By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God." Acted “by faith” “He pleased God” How did he know how…? Involved in Walking with God?   A. New Testament references: Heb. 11:5:"By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God." 1. He acted" by faith" 2. "He pleased God." 3. How would he KNOW HOW to please God -- God had revealed His will, as He always has. a. Back at this time, orally, etc. b. In our day and others in His revealed word -- Bible, NT in particular!

Involved in Walking With God? Heb. 11:5:"By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God." Acted “by faith” “He pleased God” How did he know how…? Note: Henry — "Enoch was translated, or removed, that he should not see death; God took him into heaven, as Christ will do the saints who shall be alive at his second coming. We cannot come to God, unless we believe that he is what he has revealed himself to be in the Scripture. Those who would find God, must seek him with all their heart. Noah's faith influenced his practice; it moved him to prepare an ark. His faith condemned the unbelief of others; and his obedience condemned their contempt and rebellion. Good examples either convert sinners or condemn them. This shows how believers, being warned of God to flee from the wrath to come, are moved with fear, take refuge in Christ, and become heirs of the righteousness of faith.

Involved in Walking With God? Jude 14, 15: Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. 16 These are grumblers,.." Prophesied (God’s spokesman, Ex 3 & Aaron) Spoke of the Lord’s coming to execute judgment Jude 14, 15: "Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, "Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 "to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. 16 These are grumblers,.." Note: See context of Jude, vs 3-4,ff 1. He was the 7th from Adam ***2. He prophesied (was God's spokesman, cf. Ex 3: Aaron) ***3. Spoke of the Lord's coming — to execute judgment. a. On all b. To convict the ungodly --without respect or concern for God, Creator and Governor. c. For their behavior, "deeds". 1). Ungodly deeds 2). "harsh things which have spoken --thus includes speech.

16 These are grumblers,.." Prophesied (God’s spokesman, Ex 3 & Aaron) Spoke of the Lord’s coming to execute judgment Note: We have no mention of the prophecy of Enoch in any other part or place of Scripture; yet one plain text of Scripture, proves any point we are to believe. We find from this, that Christ's coming to judge was prophesied of, as early as the times before the flood. The Lord cometh: what a glorious time will that be! Notice how often the word "ungodly" is repeated. Many now do not at all refer to the terms godly, or ungodly, unless it be to mock at even the words; but it is not so in the language taught us by the Holy Ghost. Hard speeches of one another, especially if ill-grounded, will certainly come into account at the day of judgment. These evil men and seducers are angry at every thing that happens, and never pleased with their own state and condition. Their will and their fancy, are their only rule and law. Those who please their sinful appetites, are most prone to yield to ungovernable passions. The men of God, from the beginning of the world, have declared the doom denounced on them. Such let us avoid. We are to follow men only as they follow Christ.

Walking With God Genesis 5.18-24 Conclusion: Do we see the importance of Walking -- with God? See what is required for us to do that? Examine our claims and our behavior! 1. Been reconciled? 2. Faithful? Henry's Notes: (Comment on Text) Verses 21-24. Enoch was the seventh from Adam. Godliness is walking with God: which shows reconciliation to God, for two cannot walk together except they be agreed, Amos 3:3. It includes all the parts of a godly, righteous, and sober life. To walk with God, is to set God always before us, to act as always under his eye. It is constantly to care, in all things to please God, and in nothing to offend him. It is to be followers of him as dear children. The Holy Spirit, instead of saying, Enoch lived, says, Enoch walked with God. This was his constant care and work; while others lived to themselves and the world, he lived to God. It was the joy of his life. Enoch was removed to a better world. As he did not live like the rest of mankind, so he did not leave the world by death as they did. He was not found, because God had translated him, Hebrews 11:5. He had lived but 365 years, which, as men's ages were then, was but the midst of a man's days. God often takes those soonest whom he loves best; the time they lose on earth, is gained in heaven, to their unspeakable advantage. See how Enoch's removal is expressed: he was not, for God took him. He was not any longer in this world; he was changed, as the saints shall be, who are alive at Christ's second coming. Those who begin to walk with God when young, may expect to walk with him long, comfortably, and usefully. The true Christian’s steady walk in holiness, through many a year, till God takes him, will best recommend that religion which many oppose and many abuse. And walking with God well agrees with the cares, comforts, and duties of life.   NT Passages on Walking: Acts 9:31; 14:16; 21:21; Rom. 4:12; 6:4; 8:1,4; 13:13; 14:15; 2 Cor. 4:2; 5:78; 6:16 Gal. 5:16; 6:16 Eph. 2:10 Genesis 5.18-24
