Lesson 3 Being a Good Citizen

Objectives Identify people in history who have been good citizens.  Describe the characteristics of a good citizen. Identify people in history who have been good citizens. Identify everyday heroes in a community.

Vocabulary Cooperate: Work together.

Vocabulary Justice: Fairness.

Vocabulary Character trait: A quality that a person has.

Vocabulary Boycott: People refuse to buy or use something.

Vocabulary Hero: Is a person who does something important and sets an example for others.

What is a Good Citizen? Good citizens work together, follow laws, and pay taxes, vote and respect others and their property. They also have specific traits.

Good citizens work together, follow laws, and pay taxes, vote and respect others and their property. They are also responsible, trustworthy, and fair. Citizens become government leaders. They help solve problems, and can be everyday heroes. Jimmy Carter , Rosa Parks, Dolores Huerta are all examples of good citizens.

Jimmy Carter Is an example of good citizen. He helps nation solve conflicts and helps build homes for people. He received Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Rosa Parks Rosa Parks worked for justice for African Americans. In the past, many state laws were unfair to African Americans. For example, They had to go to separate schools, ride in separate sections of buses , and use different public bathrooms from white Americans. She earned many awards with her Actions, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom .

Dolores Huerta Dolores Huerta helped Mexican farm workers become citizens and earn money.

Everyday Heroes Everyday heroes can participate in government . They can be local leaders, volunteers, and people who protest unfair laws.
