The Third attempt John White wanted to try again. Instead of using soldiers as colonists, he wanted families. Why would he want to do this? John White and Sir Walter Raleigh had gathered 110 families. Even John White’s own family went including his pregnant daughter. Would you go? Why might you go? White wanted to go farther north near Chesapeake Bay but a storm prevented them and they had to go to Roanoke.

Third Attempt The colonists began to build houses and grow crops On August 18,1587 Eleanor Dare the daughter of John White gave birth to Virginia Dare who would be the first English born baby in the Americas.

Conflict and Cooperation How was the relationship between the English and Natives before the arrival of the new colonists? By this time Wanchese was chief of the Roanoke tribe. Between Manteo and Wanchese who wanted to help the colonists and who didn’t?

Conflict and Cooperation Wanchese’s men killed a colonist who had wandered away from camp. Manteo’s relatives lived on a island not far from Roanoke. The island was called Croatoan. Manteo wanted to help the colonists but unfortunately they could not spare any food. The colonists wanted to trade with the natives but the ship that had the supplies had already left. The ship that was left wasn’t big enough to take everybody back to England.

The Lost Colony The colonists had to survive on their own. John White had took the small ship back to England to get supplies. He left his family back on Roanoke. There was a major problem. When he got back England and Spain were at war. John White wasn’t able to get back to Roanoke for 3 years. When John White got back the colony was destroyed.

The Lost Colony On a nearby tree the letters “CRO” were craved into a tree. On a wooden post the word “CROATOAN” White had instructed the colonists to carve a cross if they were in danger but there was no cross. White wanted to visit Croatoan thinking that the colonists might have moved there but the ship’s captain refused believing that a storm might wreck their ship. White went back to England. White would never see his family again. The fate of the Lost colony would be a mystery. Europeans would not settle North Carolina for decades after the Lost Colony.
