Content Servicing industry collaboration needs Global Engagement Pushing Technology Frontiers Focus on Technology Policy New Era in European Presence of IEEE

IEEE-SA: Servicing industry collaboration needs 3 IEEE-SA: Servicing industry collaboration needs IEEE offers much more than a globally open, rules-based standardization ecosystem. For over 130 years, IEEE has been the place where new technology areas emerge, become visible for the first time and are thoroughly debated. Where things mature, consensus is built and standards are established. We are a global democracy of technical experts, with a formidable reputation of technical excellence in vast areas of technology and science, setting the stage for generations of scientists and technologists to advance technology for humanity.

Universally open, no permission, no passport needed 4 IEEE’s Holistic Offer Universally open, no permission, no passport needed Building Holistic Technical Communities & Share their Knowledge (Publish) Early Tech Cycle (Αlpha): Debate (Conferences, controversial, all opinions on table) Educate (ourselves and others); Interact with other communities (includes Tech Policy) Mature Tech Cycle (Ω): Build Consensus (Standards, Guides, Codes, Alliances)

Global Engagement Expanding proactive interaction and dialogue with international SDOs and regional/national standards organizations to further collaborative technical activities and initiatives Engagement with leading global organizations such as United Nations, World Economic Forum, OECD and others, with emphasis on issues of social implications of emerging technologies Strong IEEE membership growth in Asia – expanding standards education and outreach to engage new participants in the standards ecosystem Opening of new IEEE offices in Europe and Asia

Pushing Technology Frontiers 6 Pushing Technology Frontiers Early engagement and debate on emerging technologies Leading to next generation standards projects Blockchain, AI, Smart Materials, Virtual Reality, etc. Open Source Initiatives Investing in programs advancing trust, transparency and ethics Working Group Data Services

Focus on Technology Policy 7 Focus on Technology Policy Autonomous Systems and Artificial Intelligence applications expanding rapidly – driving challenges on policy to address social-political issues IEEE and IEEE-SA explicitly addressing questions of social and ethical implications of science and technology, to align with IEEE’s larger mission to advance technology to benefit humanity Tremendous activity including: Global Public Policy Unit at IEEE Board of Directors level Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Design of Autonomous Systems as part of overall TechEthicsTM program IEEE Internet Initiative, - contributing to development of trustworthy technologies and standards, and bridging the gap between technical communities and political actors Digital Identity, Inclusion and Trust initiative

IEEE Technology Centre in Vienna Hosted at the Austrian Standards Institute What: - Advance IEEE’s position as a global organization - Facilitate global relations - Expand IEEE’s activities with stakeholders - Increase presence within IEEE, both members and volunteers How: - Collaboration, support and services to the technical community - Focusing on the needs of industry, academia, and governmental institutions - Engaging and participating in public policy by facilitating dialogue between technologists and policy makers
