Marrow production levels following iron dextran injection Marrow production levels following iron dextran injection. Patients with severe anemia and chronic blood loss can be treated with a combination of oral iron and intermittent intravenous injections of iron dextran. Each bolus of intravenous iron will increase red blood cell production to as high as 5–6 times normal for several weeks.
