CREATIVE WRITING: TASK Example: I have a sister. DESCRIPTIVE WRITING Sometimes when you say or write something, there isn’t enough information, so the other person will ask you to elaborate. But sometimes we don’t need more information—more sentences—we need more details (more adjectives). Example: I have a sister. Elaborate: I have a sister. She is a nurse. She lives in Canada. Descriptive: I have a short sister. She is a travelling pediatric nurse. She lives with my parents in Quebec, Canada.

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK DESCRIPTIVE WRITING Read these, and tell me what countries you think they are: This country has a fairly small population, just 16 million, but its area is huge. It is located in the southern hemisphere and the capital is Canberra. The people are mainly from Europe but there are also aborigines. People live in towns and on the coast, not so much inland because it is so hot. They live a lot of their lives outdoors and enjoy sports, swimming and having barbecues. This country exports wool – it has more than 60 million sheep! A good place to visit is Ayers rock. This is a huge rock in the middle of the country surrounded by springs and ancient paintings. This country is in the southern tip of Africa. The capital is Pretoria and the population is about 45 million. Of these, 80% are black and 10% white. It has a long coastline and a warm climate. Either it never rains or it rains a lot! It is the world’s biggest producer of gold and it exports diamonds, too. It grows a lot of fruit, including oranges, pears and grapes. In the game reserves you can see a lot of wildlife, including lions, elephants, zebras and giraffes.

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK DESCRIPTIVE WRITING From the two countries try to complete the following chart: FEATURE COUNTRY A COUNTRY B Location and capital   Southern tip of Africa, Pretoria Population small – 16 million Climate warm – never rains or rains a lot Geographical features huge area Industries and agriculture exports wool, sheep farming  Places of interest game reserves – see a lot wildlife People from Europe and aborigines, live on the coast, enjoy sports - swimming Food fruit – oranges pears and grapes

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK DESCRIPTIVE WRITING If you had to sort this information into three (3) paragraphs, how would you do it? Location and capital Population Climate Geographical features Industries and agriculture Places of interest People Food

CREATIVE WRITING DESCRIPTIVE WRITING You are going to write about your country. You can choose Taiwan, or another country if you know enough about it. Here are your 5 paragraphs (3 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 3 sentences): Introduction: What are you writing about? Body 1: location, capital, population, climate and geographical features. Body 2: People and food. Body 3: Industries, agriculture, and places of interest. Conclusion: Summarize the most important information. Your sentences should have about 8-10 words. I will count periods.
