Martin Luther King Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, King led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia (the Albany Movement), and helped organize the 1963 nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American history. On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. In 1965, he helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, and the following year he and SCLC took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In the final years of his life, King expanded his focus to include poverty and speak against the Vietnam War, alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". In 1968, King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Wikipedia

Today we are going to think about how people deliver great speeches. Timing Tone Volume Emphasis

King George VI King George hated public speaking and thought he’d never be able to do it. But in a time with no TV and when many people couldn’t read, radio speeches were the main form of communication.

Let’s watch the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzI4D6dyp_o

After watching the trailer… What challenges do you think King George had with his delivery?

The Speech… King George’s most crucial speech came at the start of WW2, when Britain had decided to go to war with Germany.

Now you are going to listen to the speech without the words in front of you. Think about the message King George is trying to communicate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHY2UzOonig

Which words or phrases can you remember from the speech Which words or phrases can you remember from the speech? Write them in your books before you forget!

Which words or phrases can you remember from the speech? The most memorable words are the ones that you say with passion, repeat, or leave a pause after.

Did you know...? The King’s Speech was only one paragraph long! It’s all about speaking SLOWLY and CLEARLY!

Now let’s look at the written speech while we listen again. Annotate it to include: Where the King leaves a pause : II Which words he emphasises: _____ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHY2UzOonig

So what have we learned? Speak slowly and clearly Emphasise important words so people don’t get bored Leave a dramatic pause after a really important point

Now practice reading sections of the speech to your partner. Not at the top of your voice!!! Give each other a WWW and EBI for your speech delivery
