Objectives SWBAT define and explain features of an expository essay. SWBAT to build background knowledge of being a good friend.

Expository Writing explains, and informs readers about a topic. Catchy Hook – Grab attention Thesis Statement (1 Sentence) Transition Words/Phrases Types of Expository Writing: 1. Descriptive 2. Sequential 3. Compare/Contrast 4. Cause/Effect 5. Problem/Solution Vivid Verbs Supporting Details (Examples, Data) Conclusion (Final Thoughts, and answers the question, “What’s the point?”)

“What Makes An Expository Essay?” Scavenger Hunt Let’s hunt down the elements discussed within the "Friends" text. Using highlighters, pens, and pencils, we will create an annotated paper, which shows how the author incorporates all the elements of an expository essay. Circle the hook – What sentence in the introduction grabbed your attention? Underline = Thesis Statement – What sentence shows what the author believes about having a friend in your life? Box = Transition Words – What words help move from one sentence to the next? Brackets { }= Vivid Verbs – What verbs (actions) make the writing come to life and interesting?
