1. Exposition (Introduction) Occurs at the beginning of a story Provides details about the characters and setting Gives background information and the basic situation of the story

Characters Protagonist Antagonist The main character in a story Always involved in the main conflict and resolution Usually seen as the “good guy” The character that is against the protagonist Usually seen as the “bad guy”

Setting Describes time (when the story takes place) and place (where the story takes place) Location Climate/Weather Mood (atmosphere, surroundings) Social Situation (culture, language, religion, etc)

2. Conflict A conflict is a problem that the main character faces The conflict ties events together to make the plot move forward The conflict is usually introduced early in the rising action of a story

3. Rising Action Rising action develops the conflict through a series of events that build interest, suspense, and tension Usually the longest part of a story

4. Climax The turning point of the story The conflict must be faced and action is taken The main character usually changes in some way

5. Falling Action The events following the climax The conflict starts to be wrapped up

6. Resolution (Conclusion) End of the story/the final outcome The conflict is solved

Putting It All Together Exposition Conflict 3. Rising Action 4. Climax 5. Falling Action 6. Resolution Beginning of story The main problem Main events in story ‘High point’ of story Leads to ending End of Story Video Review

Theme The moral or main idea of the story May be about life, society, or human nature Themes are NOT expressed in a single word, but are a single sentence For example, a theme of the movie Frozen could be “Love is putting someone else’s needs before your own” (as Olaf says) How to Find a Theme
