Neutralisation Lesson 7
Learning intentions Describe the process of neutralisation Evaluate the usefulness of indicators Discuss the reliability of data collected using indicators
Acids and Alkalis What do you remember? Can you think of 5 points?
Practical
Method Using a spotting tile – take 5 drops of the acid or alkali to be tested Add 3 drops of your chosen indicator Note the colour Repeat for different strengths and different indicators
Note the colour in the table below Indicator Strong acid Weak acid Water Weak alkali Strong alkali Universal Litmus Methyl Orange Phenolphthalein
Suitability of indicators Were all indicators you tested suitable for testing a wide range of items?
Practical 2 Take 10cm3 of 0.5M HCl in a small beaker Add 10 drops of universal indicator Slowly add 0.5M NaOH to the solution. Stop when you have reached neutral and note the volume added
