POV Practice Lesson 2010 DBQ Example AP World History DBQ POV Practice Lesson 2010 DBQ Example

2010 APWH DBQ Prompt Using the following documents, analyze similarities and differences in the mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan and India in the period from the 1880s to the 1930s. Identify an additional type of document and explain how it would help your analysis of the mechanization of the cotton industry.

The Documents There were 10 total documents included with this DBQ – 3 charts, 2 photographs, and 5 written pieces related to things like: Cotton production numbers by year in Japan and India Recollections of work in the cotton mills Government reports on the economic impact of cotton Images of workers in the cotton mills Observations of the type of workers in the factories

Sample Thesis During the period of 1880 to 1930, the mechanization of the cotton industry profoundly impacted both Japan and India. In both countries the cotton industry improved the overall economic production, however workers were often exploited from the poor peasant population and treated unfairly to accomplish this. A key difference in this process was that the Japanese embraced this mechanization while many Indians used it to garner support against the British rule.

Analyzing POV in the Documents In order to properly analyze the POV of a document, you need to look at where it came from and WHY it was written/made You must think about the reasons WHY this person would have this opinion or have written/made this document in that particular way Tie it back into your thesis as you do this

Using POV Statements: It often helps to be sure you are properly analyzing POV by using statements to ensure you are explaining WHY and also to point the reader towards the fact that you are actually analyzing a POV There are a number of POV statements you can modify or combine to ensure you are doing it properly – you should always practice using these statements

POV Statements: Of course (person) would since they It makes sense that (person)would because As a (person) would feel this way because Being a photograph/picture/image from From (person) point-of-view, it is easy to understand why

Your Assignment Based on the thesis provided to you, read and analyze documents 3 and 10 and write your own POV statement analyzing why each document has a particular point-of-view. You may do this on the back of the document sheet You will have five minutes and then we will be sharing your statements

Document 3 POV Statement Two women recalling their girlhood working in the factories Of course these girls would be willing to share the terrible conditions in these factories considering they actually worked in them and one of them witnessed her sister die as a result of the working conditions.

Document 10 POV Statement Photo from a report on Indian textile mills taken by a British official of the International Federation of Master Cotton Spinners’ and Manufacturers’ Association Being a photograph from a British official reporting on the Indian textile mills, it makes sense that the conditions of the factories and workers appear very clean, healthy, and safe since the British brought in a lot of economic wealth through that industry.
