2010 APWH DBQ Prompt Using the following documents, analyze similarities and differences in the mechanization of the cotton industry in Japan and India in the period from the 1880s to the 1930s. Sample Thesis During the period of 1880 to 1930, the mechanization of the cotton industry profoundly impacted both Japan and India. In both countries the cotton industry improved the overall economic production, however workers were often exploited from the poor peasant population and treated unfairly to accomplish this. A key difference in this process was that the Japanese embraced this mechanization while many Indians used it to garner support against the British rule.
