To understand the concept of fate, and explore its purpose in the play Fate Act 5, Scenes 1 & 2 To understand the concept of fate, and explore its purpose in the play

How does Romeo react to the news of Juliet’s death? Acting Parts 5:1 Romeo Balthasar Apothecary 5:2 Friar John Friar Lawrence How does Romeo react to the news of Juliet’s death?

The belief that an individual's life has been decided for them and there is nothing they can do to change it. No matter what the lovers do, what plans they make, or how much they love each other, their struggles against fate only help fulfil it. It is Romeo and Juliet's determination to struggle against fate in order to be together, whether in life or death, that shows the fiery passion of their love, and which makes that love eternal. People in Elizabethan times were serious believers in Fate, or Destiny, or Fortune – the idea that one’s future was set in stone. Devout Christians never doubted that God controlled every aspect of their lives if He wanted to. Fate was personified by godlike beings like the Fates, or Moirae, or three sisters who spun, wove and cut the threads of Destiny for all people. Fate knew everything you’d ever do – or not do – from the minute you were born. Fate

Symbols: Stars, fortune, ship A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life But whoever decides my path in sea, choose the direction of my ship! I fear, too early: for my mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars I’m afraid we’re too early: because my mind senses consequences for my actions in the stars. But He, that hath the steerage of my course, Direct my sail!  Is that the case? Then I will disobey you, stars! O, I am fortune's fool! Come, bitter leader, come, unpleasant guide! You desperate sea captain, right now crash your broken boat into the rock! Is it even so? then I defy you, stars! Two lovers who were meant to be together commit suicide Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide! Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on The dashing rocks thy sea-sick weary bark! Oh, fate has made a fool out of me!
