You will never know the importance someone has on your life; until they are no longer there to live it with you. Responsibility is important, especially when irresponsibility results in consequences that are heartbreaking.

“Doodle was my brother and he was going to cling to me forever, no matter what I did.” “ ‘Doodle!’ I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the Earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen Scarlet Ibis from the heresy of the rain.”

The author displayed his purpose throughout the story in a very upfront way. He demonstrated the obstacles and devastations in his past. He told the story with all his successes, regrets, and failures. Overall the artist wrote this story in the mindset of the memories with his brother. He wanted to share the doubts he overcame and the bond that had grown by the end. The life story of his one and only brother. Although he wasn’t the best or most supportive brother, by the end he had love for his Doodle.

Throughout the whole story, there was a feeling of death and darkness, which created an extremely dark mood. It gave the reader a feeling that something bad was going to happen. “The flower garden was stained with rotten brown magnolia petals and iron weeds grew rank amid the purple phlox.”Quotes like these in the Scarlet Ibis is what gave the reader a dark feeling.Throughout the story, the mood changes as the older brother starts to teach Doodle to be “normal.” It changes to more of a happy mood because the feeling that the reader gets changes. As the two brothers become closer throughout the story it give a feeling of hope that Doodle may live. “Then mama began to cry and ran over to him, hugging him and kissing him.” Then once again the mood changes right back to very dark and very sad. Especially with the death of the random bird and then the tragic death of Doodle. “For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of the rain.”

Foreshadowing is an important piece in the Scarlet Ibis Foreshadowing is an important piece in the Scarlet Ibis. One example of foreshadowing in the story is the mood itself. The mood tells the reader a lot about what is going to happen in any story. In the Scarlet Ibis, The mood of the first paragraph are very dark which lead to Doodle dying in the end. “Doodle was just about the craziest brother a boy ever had.” Most of the foreshadowing lead to the death of Doodle. One good example of this was this quote; “They named him William Armstrong, which was like tying a big tail on a small kite. Such a name sounds good only on a tombstone.” One of the most important pieces of foreshadowing in the story is when the Scarlet Ibis died. This was a very obvious and sad foreshadow that was critical part of the story. It was once again another foreshadow that Doodle was to die somewhere in the story. “ ‘Dead birds is bad luck’ said auntie Nicey, poking her head from the kitchen door. ‘specially red dead birds!’ ”

Phlox: a North American plant that typically has dense clusters of colorful scented flowers, widely grown as a rock-garden or border plant. Infallibility: The quality of being infallible; the inability to be wrong. Vermillion: is a brilliant red or scarlet pigment originally made from the powdered mineral cinnabar Untenanted: Not occupied by a tenant or tenants.

“So I dragged him across the burning cotton field to share with him the only beauty I knew, Old Women Swap.” -Metaphor. “I grabbed him in my arms and hugged him, our laughter peeling through the swamp like a ringing bell.” -Simile/Personification. “Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty.” -Simile. “His eyes popped round like two blue buttons.” -Simile.

The song we chose to represent this was “Fix You,” by Coldplay The song we chose to represent this was “Fix You,” by Coldplay. This is because lots of the lyrics in the song you can relate to the Scarlet Ibis through a deeper meaning. A perfect representation is the title and the first sentence of the song. “When you try your best but you don’t succeed.” “Fix You.” Doodle’s older brother got him to try over and over again in hopes that he would eventually get it. He had hopes that he would be able to fix Doodle and be able to make him a “normal” kid. Another line that would relate would be, “When the tears stream down your face, when you lose something you cannot replace.” Although the brother did not like Doodle at all to begin with, by the end of the story when he was kneeling holding Doodle in his arms crying and screaming into the pouring rain; he realized that he had lost his brother. Someone that he could never replace. I don’t think many individuals understand the importance of someone until they are no longer with us. How the life that was lost had a smile that could brighten up your day, a voice that could calm you down, or just someone that was there for you. Not many individuals understand this until they have lost someone they can never have back.t
