BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIFIC INFORMATICS Doc Dr Milan Matić

Information Set of messages, data and knowledge that forms the basis for decision making. Certain knowledge directed towards a specific purpose and it is a novelty for the recipient and it serves its interest. Scientific information - a logical information obtained in the research process that faithfully represents the objective world.

Biomedical scientific informatics Scientific field dealing with the organization and management of stored scientific and technical information from biomedical literature. Science that studies the laws of creation, transmission, processing and using information, data and knowledge to solve medical problems.

Without using scientific and technical literature there is no research work, and without it the progress  of society is not possible.

Production of scientific and technical information is Biomedicine - one of the areas that have fastest development The goal of biomedical scientific informatics - to overcome the gap between production of information in the world and ability to follow them Production of scientific and technical information is enormous

Carriers of scientific information PRIMARY PUBLICATIONS SECONDARY PUBLICATIONS TERTIARY PUBLICATIONS

PRIMARY PUBLICATIONS documents that contain text in a form, how the author created them articles in journals, reports at meetings, monographs, chapters in monographs, Master's and doctoral theses, patents, standards,

Journals General biomedical journals (NEJM (IF 2009 - 47.050), Lancet (IF 2009 – 30.758), JAMA (IF 2009 – 28.889)) Classical journals (Journal of Investigative Dermatology (IF 2009 – 5.54), Archives of Dermatology (IF 2009 – 4.760)) Highly specialised journals (Mycoses (IF 2009 – 1.402) Wounds (IF 2009 – 0.562)

Congress matterial In extenso In form of abstracts Contain large number of information Often without reviews

SECONDARY PUBLICATIONS Reviews and brief views of papers published in the primary publications Do not bring new knowledge Help in finding articles published in the primary publications

SECONDARY PUBLICATIONS Bibliographies, International and national Index journals, INDEX MEDICUS, CURRENT CONTENTS Index-abstract journals, EXCERPTA MEDICA, MEDICINSKYJ REFERATIVNYJ ŽURNAL Library catalogues – represent library resorces

TERTIARY PUBLICATIONS PROVIDE INFORMATION BASED ON PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PUBLICATIONS REFERENCE PAPERS -provide faster and direct access to scientific facts. Provide short information, referral to other sources of detailed information. Papers that themselves are a source of concise information, but also indicate to other sources. These are encyclopedias, handbooks, almanacs and dictionaries Papers which only refer to specific sources of information: address book, calendar, GUIDES

PROCEDURES IN FINDING LITERATURE I PHASE – Finding information on the scientific literature II PHASE-Finding scientific papers "in extenso" By resarcher Going to library

Finding of scientific information Blind search Browse the books and magazines Internet Non-book materials Target search Printed reference publications Database of biomedical literature Library Catalogues Full-text database

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES OF INFORMATION Electronic  index database  Electronic Publications Electronic media Portals Internet Web Sites

INDEX DATABASES bibliographic and abstract databases allow researchers to get as complete picture of past and recent research in a particular scientific field information on articles from journals become visible to wide scientific community

INDEX DATABASES CAN BE: Bibliographic - abstract (i.e. Medline) General (i.e. Science Citation Index Expended) Bibliographic - abstract - citation (i.e. Scopus) Selective (i.e. Medline)
