An Overview of Materials and Properties By D. Sameer Kumar

OVERVIEW Definition Classification Material Properties Selection of Materials

Material Science - Definition Material is a substance that serves the purpose. Material Science is the study of the properties and applications of materials. Materials Science involves the study of the relationships between the synthesis, processing, structure, properties, and performance of materials that enable an engineering function.  Ref :http://www.mse.seas.upenn.edu/about-mse/mse-defined.php It is an Interdisciplinary field involves the discovery and design of new materials, with an emphasis on solids.

Classification of Materials Ref : http://www.mechengg.net/

Materials - Properties Physical Appearance Shape Weight Melting Point Boiling Point etc… Chemical Reactivity Corrosion Resistance Composition Acidic Nature Basic Nature etc… Electrical Hysteresis Conductivity Resistivity Dielectric Strength etc… Magnetic Ferro Magnetism Para Magnetism Dia Magnetism Permeability Curie Temperature etc… Thermal Thermal Conductivity Thermal Diffusitivity Thermal Resistivity Expansion Coefficient etc… Optical Reflection Refraction Diffraction Absorptive Transparency etc…
