Students can use their planners (there are coloured pages in the back) to signal where they stand in relation to the proposed statement (agree, build or challenge). The teacher could then select students at random to voice their opinion based on the statement. When the first student has provided their opinion, the rest of the class are asked whether they want to agree, build on, or challenge the last point. This then creates a chain of argument. Alternatively, students can do this activity in groups, where they each make their own statement based on a topic. Rules: Avoid repeating words such as ‘like’ and ‘kind of’ unnecessarily. Speak clearly and fluently (take your time to form ideas). Try to create a chain of arguments.
