Salem Witch Trials September 21st

Bell Work We are going to watch a video, Answer the following questions on your notes sheet What three reason fueled the hysteria in the Salem community? What were three ways that people were killed after being accused of witchcraft? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJJLy5_Dlq

Shoulder partner activity Everyone take out a sheet of paper. Imagine that you are living in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 and you have just been accused of witchcraft. Discuss with your shoulder partner, how would this make you feel and what would you do and why? Would you stand up for yourself and defend yourself in court? Would you accuse your accuser of witchcraft? Would you run? Would you try to rally people to your side? Or would you do something else. Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph explaining what you discussed. When writing explain how you would feel, what you would do, and why?

REading Class reading of the Salem Witch Trial Essay

Group Activity Get into groups of three to five. Each group will be handed a document to analyze. Analyze the document as a group. If you have a document, that says to refer to another document, do not answer those questions. Wait until all the documents have been passed out. After every group is done analyzing their document, all the documents will be passed out to everyone. Each group will teach the other groups about the documents.

Writing Writing: On your own sheet of paper, write a two paragraph summary of the documents. In your summary, be sure to include information about how many people were put to death, how many people were accused, how many people were accusers, the gender of the people involved, why so many people believed the accusers, and how geographical location may have contributed to the accusations.
