Revision lesson on Housing

List what you see in the picture An attic occupied by a family of 10, Bethnal-Green. Illustrated Times,1863. When was the picture drawn and where was it published?

How useful was the picture in showing living conditions of the poor in the late C19th? Is it a Primary or Secondary source? What benefit is this? Where was the picture published? Why do YOU think it was published? What does the picture show? How useful is the picture?

Explain what housing was like for the poor in towns in the C19th Source A is from Bleak House, written by Charles Dickens in 1853. It is a description of St Giles, a street in London: 'It is a black, dilapidated street, avoided by all decent people...these tumbling tenements contain, by night a swarm of misery. … these ruined shelters have bred a crowd of foul existence that crawls in and out of gaps in walls and boards; and coils itself to sleep where the rain drips in ; and comes and goes, fetching and carrying fever” Remember to use information from the source, and LOTS of your own knowledge.
