What is a D-U-N-S Number? Before you can apply for government grants, you need to obtain a Dun & Bradstreet, or D-U-N-S number, a unique nine-digit identification number for your organization.  DUNS number is used to create your business credit file, similar to how your social security number is used to identify your personal credit reports. D-U-N-S number is NOT the same as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) also known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN). (BOTH are necessary for Grants.gov.)

What is SAM.GOV? SAM stands for System Award Management, it replaced the CCR (Central Contractor Registration) database. Active SAM registration is a pre-requisite to the successful submission of grant applications! Website: www.sam.gov

SAM INSTRUCTIONS Create a Personal Account and Login Click "Register New Entity" under "Manage Entity" on your "My SAM" page Select your Entity type Select "NO" to "Do you wish to bid on contracts?" Select "YES" to "Do you want to be eligible for grants and other federal assistance?" Complete "Core Data" Validate your DUNS Enter Business Information Enter CAGE code if you have one. If not, one will be assigned to you after you have completed your registration. Enter General Information (business type, etc.) Financial Info (EFT) Proceedings detail Complete "Point of Contact" The entity's registration should be active in 7-10 business days.

Tips for Working with Grants.gov Start early! Grants.gov has checklists, FAQs, and online tutorials to assist you in preparing your organization to submit applications. You must designate at least one Authorized Organization Representative (AOR) to use Grants.gov, designating several staff members provides extra insurance to protect against last minute staff availability. (Be sure to update the AOR at Grants.gov when staff at your organization changes, and make sure passwords are current and accessible.)
