STEPS TO WORK 2017

Steps to Work ACADEMY EMPLOYABILITY AWARD UNITS: UNIT 1: Responsibilities of Employment UNIT 2: Preparing for Employment: First Steps UNIT 3: Building Own Employability Skills

TOPIC 1 Good and Bad Behaviour at Work Learning Intention: Think about suitable behaviour in your place of work Success Criteria Think about types of good and bad behaviour

On your FOXLAKE placement, you are expected to show a high standard of behaviour at all times. If your behaviour or attitude is not good, then there may be consequences.

Discuss what you think are examples of good and bad behaviour in the work place. Use a mind map to present your ideas. Have a class discussion to see what other people have come up with. Discuss the reasons for your choices.

What about these ones – which ones are do’s... ...and which ones are don’ts?

Topic 2 Rights and Responsibilities Learning Intention: Think about our rights and responsibilities Success Criteria Be aware of how these fit into the work place

As well as having responsibilities in the work place to behave well and have a good attitude, you are also entitled to certain rights. Your “responsibilities” are about your behaviour and conduct at work. Your “rights” are about how your employer treats you.

Your rights in the workplace To get Health and Safety training To be treated well Job Training Not be bullied Not be discriminated against because of: age, disability, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation Can you think of any others?

Complete Task 1a in your pupil booklet Make sure your answers are well thought out Make your writing neat and tidy Don’t write short answers. Try to give developed answers

Topic 3 Differences in the work place Learning Intention: Can use straightforward vocabulary. Think about our behaviour in a range of places. Success Criteria Analyse our actions and behaviours

Think about how your behaviour can vary in different situations Think about how your behaviour can vary in different situations. Copy this table into your jotter, fill in the blanks and compare with others. At home At school At work Out with friends What you say What you wear How you behave

Complete Task 1b in your pupil booklet Make sure your answers are well thought out. Make your writing neat and tidy. Don’t write short answers. Try to give developed answers.

Topic 4 Consequences Learning Intention: Think about the consequences of our behaviour and attitudes Success Criteria Think about the impact of our behaviours and actions

What does the word “consequence” mean? Give examples of what consequences might be at home or in school for various things eg being rude or not following instructions. What about these ones?

What happens in the world of work? Possible issues: Lateness Too many unauthorised absences Not following instructions Being rude Unsuitable dress Drinking/ smoking in work place Falling out with people Poor quality work Make nasty comments on Facebook etc. Think about the consequences of poor behaviour in the work place. What kinds of things could happen to you?

What about these ones? Verbal warning Written warning Suspension Dismissal Loss of earnings Difficulty in getting another job

The Consequences: Case Study 1 Read article 1 which describes the risks of abusing Facebook.

In your groups discuss the issues that come from this newspaper article. What do you think the following phrases mean? Industrial tribunal Obscene comments Gross misconduct Code of conduct Act of harassment

Some suggestions: Industrial tribunal Obscene comments A panel of people who settle disputes between employers and employees. Obscene comments Comments that may be of a hurtful/ sexual nature Gross misconduct Something so serious that it leads to immediate dismissal Code of conduct A set of rules Act of harassment Bullying incident Do you feel the company was right to sack the man in question? How do you think the woman would have felt as a result of his behaviour? What is the effect of the dismissal on the man who was sacked.

Case Study 2 Why did Miss Swan get sacked? Do you agree with the company’s decision? Why do you think the company acted in this way?

Case Study 3 Read the article on Gordon Ramsay and answer the questions on your own first and then discuss with the class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =TAV3X5bqcAs&feature=related

Complete Task 2 in your pupil booklet Make sure your answers are well thought out. Make your writing neat and tidy. Don’t write short answers. Try to give a developed answers.

Topic 5 Patchwork Poster Learning Intention: Think about progress made so far on the Steps to Work Programme Success Criteria Discuss with classmates and an invited guest

Everyone in the class has two different coloured card/ post its. On one of them write down something that you have learned @ FOXLAKE so far and on the other one write one thing you would like to develop or learn when you start programme. All the cards should be stuck to a board to make a patchwork poster. Have a look at all the other comments and see if you can find any patterns. Any similarities or trends? Invite a guest into your class once the patchwork poster is completed – perhaps your Guidance Teacher - and explain to them what you have learned from the Steps to Work Academy so far.

Mystery Guest Speaker Your speaker should tell you what they think about good and bad behaviour and the consequences. Prepare questions to ask on this topic and any general questions about their job. Keep notes in your jotter.

Topic 6 Evaluation and Assessment Complete your evaluation of this unit in your Pupil booklet. Your teacher will also comment on your performance and give you either a Pass or Areas for Development based on your work as a whole in this unit.
