When You Sin Psalm 51 The problem is sin - our disobedience of God Euphemisms do not remove or excuse sin You will sin, so what will you do when you do?

Wrong Ways to Deal with Sin Deny it - cf. 1 John 1:8, 10; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 Rationalize - Claim you are good enough - cf. Romans 3:10-12; Isaiah 64:6; Matthew 7:21-23

Wrong Ways to Deal with Sin Disregard - “so I sin, so what?” - cf. Romans 7:13; Luke 16:19-31 Give false repentance - cf. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10

True Repentance Psalm 51:1-6 - Confession vs. 1-2: David’s plea for God’s grace, mercy & cleansing vs. 3 : David fully acknowledge his sinfulness vs. 4 : David recognized sin was primarily against God vs. 4 : David accepts God’s justice

True Repentance Psalm 51:1-6 - Confession vs. 5 : David recognizes his sin nature vs. 6 : David agrees with God that truth is needed from within (See also Mark 7:20-23)

True Repentance Psalm 51:7-1 - Petitions vs. 7: Hyssop - Leviticus 14, 19 - ceremonial cleansing vs. 7: “White as snow” - inward, complete cleansing vs. 8: Sin brings sorrow and David wants his joy restored vs. 9: David wants God to turn away from his sin and remove them all

True Repentance Psalm 51:7-1 - Petitions vs. 10: David desires a clean heart and a spirit that would not stumble vs. 11: David’s plea that the Holy Spirit would not be taken away as had happened to Saul vs. 12: David’s request to be restored & sustained

True Repentance Psalm 51:13-19 - Results vs. 13: Teach others God’s ways vs. 14: Joyfully sing of God’s righteousness vs. 15: Declare God’s praise

True Repentance Psalm 51:13-19 - Results vs. 16-17: Bring the true sacrifice of a broken & contrite heart to God vs. 18-19: Petition God to continue His favor over Zion

The Marks of Repentance Full Acknowledgment of sin (Not trying to hide it) Humility. (Not pride & trying to pass the buck) Acceptance of the consequences. (Not trying to get out of them) Godly sorrow. (Sorrow for the sin, not just sorrow for getting caught)

The Marks of Repentance Desire for God's will (not desire for own benefit) Desire for cleansing from the sin(s) Desire for a pure heart Desire to warn others of sin Desire to praise the Lord for His righteousness

The Marks of Repentance True repentance brings the joy of forgiveness No / false repentance brings continued tragedy
